Cortland, New York is a town in Cortland County, New York, United States. The population was 7,615 at the 2010 census. The name of the town is derived from the French word "corte" meaning "a fence." The first European to visit the area were Dutch traders who established a trading post in 1614 on an island near present-day Cortland. In 1764, John Montresor founded what became known as Montresor's Manor on land that he had purchased from the Iroquois chiefcode named for him and his brother Sir Issac Morden. In 1824, Hiram Bingham donated 3 acres (1 km2) of land to be used as a village square and named it for himself and his wife Harriet Beecher Stowe. She later moved there with her family after marrying John Haywood Morse. In 1862, cottonseed farmers began cultivating land in what is now Cortland; they developed strip crops such as corn, soybeans, wheat and rice that would later be grown into large scale agriculture. The first store opened in 1865 by A.F. Kelly & Son; it was replaced by Jardine & Hetherington's department store in 1925. During World War II (1939-1945), large amounts of munitions were produced at nearby Ford Motor Company Specialty Division facilities; these included B-29s used for strategic bombing over Japan during World War II and also built under Project Y which resulted in saving Hiroshima from destruction by firebombing during that conflict). In 1972, when the last remaining original roundabouts within town boundaries were removed following construction of new arterial roads across the county line - including one around present day downtown Cortland - the town came fully under state control as part of newly created Montezuma County.. It remained an unincorporated community until its incorporation into the city of Cortland on January 1st 2006 according to Town Board Resolution No./2006-007 .
