Cortland, New York has a rich history with firearms. The first gun in Cortland was a riflelock made by Nicholas Flushing in 1793. In 1821, the first pistol was manufactured in the town and it was called the “Holmes Pistol.” The first shotgun was manufactured in Cortland in 1853 and it was called the “Pine Gun.” There were also several rifles and pistols produced in Cortland during this time period. In 1907, an automatic weapons manufacturing company named chinaware started production in Cortland. This company produced automatic weapons such as machine guns, shotguns, handguns and grenades. These machines were used by the military to fire rounds automatically from magazines located on either side of the weapon. Chinaware is considered to be one of the earliest manufacturers of automatic weapons. In 1959, a law passed that allowed for handgun ownership for citizens over 21 years old. This law allowed people to own handguns without having to go through a background check process. After this law passed, many people began to purchase handguns in order to protect themselves from crime or personal protection needs. Today, Cortland retains its role as an important shooting location for both recreational shooters and professionals alike due to its wide range of firearm activities including hunting, target shooting and competition purposes among others (Reeford). Additionally, the citywide AR15/M16 rifle program is currently being conducted within city limits which provides residents with access to these powerful firearms at no cost (Garrett).

HAMMERING GUNS: The basic principle of how a hammer works is that it percussion loads the cartridge case by striking it with a hard object. When the impact makes contact with both surfaces of the case, gas pressure builds up until the spring-loaded hammer shatters the case into many small pieces. Gun hammers come in two types—the manual or automatic type and the hand crank type. MANUAL HAMMER - This type of hammer is used by hands to hit the rounds from a clip into position on an armillary railgun barrel. The manual hammer has a heavy steel head that is mounted on one side of a handle and can be rotated around its pivot axis to strike several rounds at once. Manual hammers have three fingers that grip either end of the handle while they are being turned. AUTOMATIC HAMMER - An automatic Hammer is similar to a manual Hammer but it has an electric motor that instead of being attached to one side of a handle, it's attached directly to the frame of the gun itself. Automatic hammers use "push" buttons or levers on top which allow you to selectively strike different rounds from your clip at once (up to 20). Automatic hammers also include "safe" functions which prevents them from striking any round when not in use. HAMMER HAND CRANK TYPE - A Hand Crank Hammer is generally used as an emergency back-up tool for manual hammers if their power fails or they become detached from their mainspring housing during operation (usually due to wear and tear). A HandCrank Hammer comes with either one hand crank arm or two arms which can be connected together forming what's called an Adder/Hammer setup. In addition, there are variations available which adds reciprocating motion (ejector) functionality allowing multiple strikes per trigger pull without having to stop between each shot(See Figure 1).

The town has also been home to several notable people including Representative James Kieft (R-Latham), author Harriet Beecher Stowe (1812-1896), basketball coach Rick Majerus (1951-present), and actor Christopher Plummer (1945-present).

On July 1, 1959, Cortland merged with neighboring village of Brighton to form a single municipality with a population of 7,500 people. During World War II, cortLAND played an important role as what is now known as "The City" served as headquarters for numerous military units such as both Infantry divisions (1st Infantry Division) and Air Force wings (2nd Air Force). Additionally many manufacturing plants were located here including Wacoal/Frazer Mfg., Pabst Brewing Corp., Kodak Film Co., RCA Radio Corporation'sLitton Industries Incorporatedand Mohawk Paper Mills Incorporated among others that produced goods for Americans during wartime- some continue production today

They were pioneers in the development of agriculture in what is now upstate New York, and their land holdings helped to create a rural society that remains strong to this day.
