The first Europeans to visit what is now Cortland County were Dutch fur traders in 1614. In 1764, General George Washington and his army burned down the fort on the south side of Seneca Lake in what is now the town of Rome. The area around Rome became known as "the burnt-down country" because so many buildings from that time have been destroyed by fire or weathering. In 1798, John Dunkin founded Dunkin's Coffee Company in Rometown and served coffee until 1857 when it moved to Utica City. In 1830s and 1840s various other small businesses were founded in and around Rometown including a flour mill (1830), bakery (1840), sawmill (1860), grist mill (1870), cheese factory (1910) and chicken coop (1920). The first post office opened in Cortland on November 4, 1823; it was renamed Romeville on February 14th of that year due to its location near the newly completed Erie Canal.
