The Cortland Rifle and Pistol Club was founded in 1869 by a group of local farmers. The first club meetings were held at the home of John Parkhurst, who donated the land for the clubhouse. In 1875, the club purchased a rifle range and handgun range from Diedrich Abel. The club has been meeting at various locations in Cortland since then. The pistols used by Cortland Rifle and Pistol Club members were all made in New York City by Nicholas-Jacques Conte & Sons. These pistols are considered some of the finest examples of their type ever produced. Many of these handguns remain in use today by law enforcement agencies around the world. In 1907, Cortland Rifle and Pistol Club president Wm. Cushing introduced a new type of pistol known as an "automatic." The town was first settled in 1795 and laid out on a grant from Revolutionary War general George Washington. It became a village in 1824 and attained incorporation as a city in 1856. The current name for the town comes from their founder, James M. Cortland (1811-1880). Mr. Cortland was a successful manufacturer of flour and baking powder and had an important role in the development of both towns during their early years. In 2007, new construction began on what will be the world's largest concrete-and-steel water tower designed by internationally known architect Iwo Jima Jones; it is scheduled to be completed by 2019 and will feature an observation deck that will allow visitors to view neighboring villages and rural settings as they pass by.

Cortland, New York is a small town in upstate New York and is the county seat of Cortland County. The population was 9,692 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Mohawk River between Albany and Schenectady counties. The first European to visit what is now Cortland County was Johnakeecht (or Jacques) de Montmorency, who explored it in 1217. He named it after his place of residence, Courtenay Castle in England. In 1614, Captain John Smith discovered the geography and potential for trade with the Dutch colony of Utrecht while exploring the area around what is now Albany. This led to Fort Orange being built on an island near where the Mohawk River empties into Lake Ontario about two miles downstream from present-day Cortland County. In 1785, during the Revolution against Great Britain, Colchester soldiers under General George Clinton burned down Fort Orange as part of their efforts to destroy British supplies entering Canada from Quebec City through Lake Ontario. The destruction of Fort Orange effectively ended British control over this important route into Canada. shortly thereafter Jameson's Tavern became one of the most popular tourist destinations in Upstate New York due to its unique architecture and interesting history including its role as home to two Ulysses S Grant presidents (Ulysses S Grant was born there). The tavern closed in 1892 but reopened as a museum in 1993 called "Jameson's Tales." In 2006–2007 it won a national award from Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) for being one of America's "10 Hidden Gem Places." A new $2 million arena project has been announced by Mayor Tim Wolfe that will include a gymnasium/multi-purpose room/, event space/, hotel suite/room*, parking lot*, and 100 residences*.
