In 1824 Cortland became a separate county and was renamed for President James K. Polk. In 1827 it became part of the new State of New York and was annexed to the city of Troy on May 25, 1896. The Erie Canal connected Cortland with Buffalo and other parts of New York City; however, this connection soon came to be overshadowed by railroads. A canal survey in 1855 proposed building a railroad through Cortland but no action was taken until 1863 when the NY Central Railroad obtained permissions to build from Albany to Watertown through the town center (now known as Webster Hall). This line eventually became part of the NY Central system and today serves as one end of a long tunnel called "the Great Northeastern Railway" which runs under downtown Troy. “The Turnpike” becomes more important during Dutch colonial times because it allowed goods carried over land between Albany and Westchester County (then Kingsbury) to be sold directly to purchasers instead of going through intermediate retailers like retail stores or carters who would take advantage of transport costs or slow down delivery times. In 1792 many settlers left England for what they thought would be easier lives with less taxes Paid in their home country than they experienced back there so they set out west on foot across North Americabearing only their belongings(including food) hoping that God would direct them towards this new land where he had brought them before!
