Cortland, New York is a small town located in the Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York. The population was 4,886 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cortland-Oswego-Hudson Valley micropolitan area. The town has a rich cultural history and is known as a center for arts and culture. The first Europeans to visit what is now Cortland were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1614. They named the area "Willemstadt" after Prince Willem van Oranje, future King of Holland. The first settler in what is now Cortland was Nicholas Sacco, who arrived in 1736. He built a log cabin on the banks of the Haudenosaunee River and named it "Sacco's Acre". In 1805, George Washington visited what is now Cortland while he was on his way to battle Great Britain in Canada. During his visit, he stopped at Sacco's Cabin for dinner and accepted an invitation from Nicholas Sacco to stay for breakfast the next morning. This event is considered to be one of the earliest mentions of cortland Township by Americans. The first Methodist Episcopal church was organized in 1824 by Revs John Aiken and James Breene under the name First Congregational Church of Westchester County (later renamed United Methodist). In 1839, when Ohsweken separated from Westchester County, First Congregational became Ohsweken United Methodist Church which still meets there today. Reverend Samuel Morse donated land to build a schoolhouse near present day Main Street in 1847 which became Griggs Academy; later Griggs High School; finally Cortland Community College where Iowans currently attend classes! In 1861 Appleton & Co., manufacturers of flour mills began operating outbuildings on Main Street between State Central Avenue and Third Avenue North Now called Eastman Plaza; later: Eastman Square In 1898 Broome Electric Light Company established their plant just east of Route 5 south across from Griggs Academy Today Empire Power Systems Incorporated There are also several private schools that provide schooling including Our Lady Of Carmel School District No 1 Primary School (a private Catholic school), Sacred Heart Elementary School (a Protestant religious school), Stonington Jr./Sr High School (public high school) as well as several churches including Lutheran/Catholic/Anglican services being conducted all throughout town!

Cortland, New York is a town in Cortland County, New York, United States. The population was 7,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albany–Schenectady–Troy Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was named for General George Washington's birthplace and first home in present-day Columbia County. In 1795, the town was incorporated as a village by order of Governor John Jay. The Village of Cortland became a borough on April 14, 1868 from portions of the Town of Clinton. On December 12, 1914, the Borough of Cortland merged with the City of Troy to form a new city government. The Dutch settlers who founded what is now Cortland arrived in 1624 and called their land "Kortelandt". They built Fort Orange about 1 mile (1 km) east of present-day Cortland and fortified it against native Indians. After victory over the natives at Fort Nassau in 1664 by Captain Abraham Darby, many Dutch families returned to Kortelandt and began American settlement there in 1795 under pressure from British colonists living nearby in Kingston and other townships west of Albany. In that year, Kortelandt had a total population of only seventy two people; however this rapid growth led to its incorporation as an actof parliament on October 9th as Clinton Township No 511 with full power to make laws within its borders subject only to those made by Port Royal Borough - which then included all but one block adjacent to present-day Cortlandtowne Center downtown - when that borough split off fromClinton Township on January 1st 1802 pursuant to an act filed by Philip Schuyler Livingston (the future Sixth Mayor). In 1814 during Andrew Jackson's presidency as president pro tempore in the United States Senate he authorized $10,000 for surveys throughout northwest New York for preparing such a map showing territory for annexation into the United States as might be desired by Texas promoters; this territory would include what is now much eastern Cornell County including parts north and northeast of current day TroyNY In 1825 Congress passed an act entitled "An Act To Encourage American Manufacturers" which granted large tracts along Lake Ontario outside Toronto area unfettered access to cheap agricultural labor needed for manufacturing heavy industry outside Great Britain; these lands were eventually developed into Canada's Niagara Peninsula including much now known as Westchester County NY A decade later after successful slave rebellions among Upper South Africans impoverishing their masters they migrated plus some free blacks northwards seeking opportunity while avoiding contact with former slave states wanted business opportunities mainly transportation links opened up following military engagements between American forces occupying Europe resulting emancipation proclamation leading Free black migration chain reaction starting exotic animal trade flourished areasaharied growing rich especially salt pork production helped develop Erie Canal economy creating Buffalo NY until mid 1800s when western Unites States closed door on southern Europeans via building US Military Academy near Annapolis MD Later immigrants established small businesses here developing primarily agriculture until late 1800s due primarily mass migration from Eastern European countries followed by Depression
Cortland was first settled by the Lenape in 1614. The town was named for John Cortland, a landowner in the area. It initially consisted of two settlements, One on the north side of the Susquehanna River and one on the south side. In 1651, both settlements were combined into a single town under the name of "Cortland". In 1800, Cortland became part of New York state and was chartered as an incorporated city. In 1827, it became a county seat and remained so until 1898 when it moved to Albany. Since its incorporation as a city, Cortland has undergone many changes including becoming an agricultural center with large tracts of corn and beans being grown; developing into an industrial center with manufacturing businesses such as sheet metal products and cigar boxes; becoming a bedroom community for Albany; and experiencing population growth due to waves of immigrants coming to work in industries such as clothing manufacturing or transportation.
