It was home to more than 60 schools and colleges along with many businesses and cultural institutions such as Oneonta Museum and Paper Mill Museum (now part of Glen Falls Community College). However, since World War II has seen negative consequences for Cortland as it has lost much jobs due to automation or relocation; this has led to a decline in population over recent decades while average incomes have not kept up with increases in surrounding communities.
