However, almost all trade through Fort Niagara passed through Fort Orange or Buffalo until vessels could be built larger enough for navigation on the Erie Canal – making this one of only a few places along its 1,600 mile length where goods transported didn’t rely primarily on water access. Cortland is a town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Sullivan County and part of the Albany–Schenectady–Troy Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Cortland comes from one of several places in what is now Sullivan County where European settlers first encountered Native Americans. One such place was what is now Cortland Lake. European traders and travelers described the area around Cortland as being rich with wild fruit trees and animals, making it an ideal place to settle down and start a new life. The first permanent settler in what would become Cortland was Nicholas Weibel in 1786. Weibel named his land "Cortland" after Jameson's Tavern on the Mohawk River near modern Troy, New York which he had visited while on his way to purchase some land in this region from a Dutchman. In 1807, Aaron Burr bought 300 acres (120 ha) of land just east of present-day Cortland for $10 per acre ($1 per sq km). Burr planned to build a mill there but never got around to it. In 1812, John Morse located a sawmill on the river north of present-day Cortlandsville for use byavers who were clearing forests along the Hudson River for lumber production. When Morse died in 1825, his son Amos built him another sawmill on nearby White Lake which continued until 1922 when it closed due to heavy competition from mills operated by Standard Paper Company across the river in Schenectady; standard also destroyed many miles of aqueducts during World War II which impaired water flow throughout central New York City.) The post office at Cortlandsville was established in 1821, and remained open until 1955; its last official notice appeared dated November 2 that year. As changes occurred within American society during the 19th century – including increased travel outside rural areas – more people began moving into villages dotting up across eastern America than into towns like those found hereabouts (save perhaps Forks or Ossining), so much so that by 1800 only about 60% of residents living inside current-daySullivan County resided within 5 miles (8 km)of any larger center; indeed most citizens lived quite some distance away even though their property lay within extant towns or villages! What had once been considered isolated frontier outposts gradually became home base for entire families over time – something that naturally helped preserve anonymity and separateness while simultaneously fostering social/religious diversity among these pioneering community members as well as developing new skills essential for survival beyond subsistence producing agriculture…. By 1830 nearly all natives living near contemporary Fort Erie had either left or come under Urantia Baptist Mission auspices although they still engaged therein spiritually…..A few years later Presbyterian missionaries arrived bearing gifts including religious education services intended mainly for aboriginal youths… soon after they founded two churches: First Presbyterian Church [now Bishop Davenport USMCA] south side Of fort Erie Rd…. Second Presbyterian Church [now Waterford United Methodist Church] at corner Of Main St & cornered lot opposite First Presbyterian Church’s back door….. From then until today there have been over 350 churches affiliated with Urantia Baptist Mission alone!! Settlement proceeded cautiously at first because available transportation alternatives were limited by difficult terrain and isolation; however pressure mounting from lack of food storage capacity led early pioneers to establish irrigation systems through canals dug through hillsides adjacent to their properties……By 1850 farmers had developed large fields suitable for corn farming flanked by forest tracts providing timber …..Farming eventually replaced hunting as primary source ot income generating large estates averaging 1/2 mile square with house(s) commanding sweeping views extending 10 blocks inland……todayHudson Valley Country Club offers golf courses comprising challenging landscapes stretching northeastward past Middle Village [on Rte 22]…."
