The first permanent settler in what is now Cortland was Nicholas de Witt in 1776. He and his family were among the earliest Europeans to settle in this area. In 1814, John Cramer bought the land from Nicholas de Witt for $10 per acre. Cramer named the settlement "Cortland" after Alexander Hamilton's home state of New York. In 1825, a post office called "Cortland" was established at the junction ofpresent-day State Route 9 and West Side Road (now Union Avenue). A year later, it became an incorporated village with a government structure distinct from that of neighboring village of Ichthysville. In 1830s and 1840s, many farmers moved into this area to raise crops such as corn and beans on large tracts of fertile ground that had been purchased or leased by farmers before; these men built log cabins or other outbuildings near present-day downtown Cortland to live in while their fields grew maize and other vegetables subsistence level incomes necessary to survive during these difficult times. These early pioneers are memorialized by name on several streets located within downtown Cortland today: De Witt Boulevard (named for Nicholas de Witt), Prentiss Boulevard (named for Major General James Prentiss), Germanna Street (named for Anna Maria Hess), and Dutchna Street (named after Cornelius Van der Nieuwmark). A post office called "Cortland" was established at the junction of present-day State Route 9 and West Side Road (now Union Avenue) on December 3rd, 1830.. A year later it became an incorporated village with a government structure distinct from that of neighboring village of Ichthysville... On March 14th 1861 — just two years after becoming an incorporated Village — Cortlands voters passed a resolution setting aside one half mile square eastward along US 9 from Dutchna Street north to Germanna Street as part of what would become known as Park Square.. On April 1st 1865 — less than one year after Park Square was created– residents voted not to annex any adjacent villages when they passed a resolution asking for annexation...On November 1st 1867 — less than one year after Park Square was created — residents voted overwhelmingly not to annex any adjacent villages when they passed another resolution asking for annexation... In 1870s most current buildings were constructed on First Avenue between Dutchna and Germanna Streets which functions as our Town Hall today
