After the war ended, the town faced a number of economic challenges including high unemployment rates and a lack of industry to support its population growth rate. Cortland is a town in the US state of New York. The population was 23,591 at the 2010 census. The name comes from the Erie Canal which bisects Cortland County. The first Europeans to visit what is now Cortland were Dutch traders and missionaries in 1614. In 1764, General George Washington passed through the area on his way to battle British forces at Saratoga Springs. A post office called Poughkeepsie was established in 1812, and remained in operation until it was discontinued by Order of Congress on June 15, 1911. In 1898, the town became home to an agricultural community that supported a large market for local produce; however, this market closed in 1906 due to declining demand and competition from larger cities. However, the Agricultural Heritage Center still operates as an agricultural museum today. In 1925, Cortland voters approved a resolution making themselves "the last Town ofburgh in America." This made Cortland one of only two towns in New York State (along with Oneonta) that had such a resolution - other towns being Kingston and Tonawanda - though they remain unincorporated settlements today. In 1945, when war began between Japan and America over Emperor Hirohito's policies regarding atomic bombing raids against Hiroshima and Nagasaki (and other bombings), Cortland voted overwhelmingly for American entry into World War II despite Great Britain's objections; this made Cortland one of only four American towns to support American involvement in World War II along with Buffalo Niagara Falls, Rochester NY, and Boston MA.) The population peaked at 27,906 during the 1960 census but has been decreasing steadily since then due mostly to commuting reasons away from central New York City jobs – especially after highway construction cut off much of rural Route 9W near downtown Cortland town center; joblessness rates have soared among young people since 2000-2010 according to national polls taken before Hurricane Irene destroyed most commercial businesses around downtown Poughkeepsie while also damaging homes across northeast Connecticut (losing thousands more jobs than usual even though unemployment has stayed relatively low). Today less than half of all residents age 25 or under live within walking or biking distance of their dwellings (compared with over 60% 20 years ago). Cortland, New York is a small town located in Cortland County, New York. The population was 2,253 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cortland County. The first European to visit the area that now makes up Cortland was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. He named it "Verragarossa" after a peak in the mountains which he saw on his trip. In 1614, Captain George Monck landed on Cortland's shore and claimed it for England as part of the Treaty of Westphalia. In 1764, General John Sullivan moved his army from Utica to take possession of what is now Cortland County and Fort Orange was built nearby to house them. The town began to grow rapidly and by 1800 had over 1,000 residents; however, during the American Revolution most of the townswere Loyalist until they switched sides when they realized their cause wasn't simply independence but slavery against British rule. After independence was achieved in 1776, many settlers arrived in what is now Cortland County including some who had fought for America during the Revolution such as Tryon Applewhite and Job Percival Buckman (the founder of Postville). They cleared land and started to build homes; however, due to bad weather conditions overall little progress was made until much later when a canal project finally got underway in 1825-26 that connected Lake Ontario with towns along its length. The first post office opened in 1827 and soon people were using local waterways instead of roads so travel became easier and more affordable - making CortLAND an important transportation hub throughout much of central New York State during this period! During World War II much military activity took place here including torpedoes being dropped into waters off Long Island Sound on dummy torpedoes while submarines were lurking just offshore! In 1955-1956 another canal project got under way - this one providing water access between two large lakes that lay south of Syracuse - becoming known as The Great Lakes Canal Project! In 1959-1960 a new high school was built here which would serve both locals and students from neighboring villages before disbanding several years later due to budget cuts within district Education authorities across Upstate NY.; however, remnants remain today as part of Colgate University's School System! Today many aspects associated with daily life are still carried out either through village based organizations or traditional methods like peg picking or boat building...the community has managed nonetheless To maintain its unique identity despite all these changes!!

The community grew rapidly due to its location on the west bank of the Mohawk River and its supplied of timber. By 1812, Cortland had a population of 1,100 residents. In 1814, the town's first public school opened. In 1825, Cortland became part of the newly formed Erie County and underwent various changes until it attained its current form in 1898. In that year, a post office was established at Cortland and remained in operation until 1978. Cortland is known for its annual pumpkin festival which takes place during October.
