During the American Civil War, many residents sided with Confederate General Robert Ewing against Union General Ulysses S. Grant because they felt that Grant was too friendly to Yankees and not tough enough on Yankee sympathizers like themselves. This resulted in an increased number of murders and thefts by Northerners who thought that Confederates would be less likely to resist potential attacks by Yankees if they knew they would have support from people like locals who had sided with their hated opponents. In 1865, following the end of Reconstruction in America after more than two centuries of slavery/enslavement, CortLAND passed an act legalizing white persons owning land north of Massachusetts' line as well as abolishing slavery on November 3rd 1865 by popular vote; this event is considered to be one of the most important steps towards ending racial discrimination across America throughout much of Reconstruction era which continued until World War II when it finally ended through Vichy France's policy known as "L'Enmaître". Today's community has experienced significant growth since its incorporation into village status back in 1925 when only about twenty individuals lived hereabouts including mayor Harry McKay (1929–2005) himself along with Police Chief Tom Dorman (1945–2006), Treasurer Bernie Kapp (1973–2006), Supervisor Jeffery Ackerman (1983–2007), City Clerk Sue McFarlane (1993‐present), Borough President Rick Hickey (1999‐present) among others!
