Corning, New York is a town located in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 6,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albany–Schenectady, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by Cornelius Vanderbilt on October 1, 1825. In 1828 it became an agricultural village and in 1846 it became a town. It enlarged its boundaries in 1908 when the towns of Rome and Webster were annexed to Corning. The name "Corning" first appeared on maps in 1784 as Cornbury Township and was anglicized to Gorham Township in 1802. In 1898 the name was changed from Gorham to Corning because of objections from residents of other towns within Chenango County who felt that their name would be less competitive with other places with similar names such as Saratoga Springs and Oneonta. The first post office opened in 1826 and remained open until 1955. The first store built in the town was called the Post Office Store & Tavern which closed down around 1860 due to competition from stores opening up near by including what is now Dunkin' Donuts. The first school was built on land donated by Mrs John Purdy in 1829 which eventually evolved into Our Lady's School which serves children throughout Chenango County today as well as parts of western New York City since 1957; however much like many other rural school districts during these times girls were not allowed to attend school past 8th grade until after World War II when they were given driver's licenses instead of having to go through traditional public education channels Open enrollment continued through Intermediate School until 1985 when all pre-kindergarten students were re-instated into grades K-3 along with continuation for several years prior Middle Schools currently offer 9th/10th grade classes starting fall 2017 (9th/10th grade being replaced for PreKindergarten) While this change does not affect most families living here there are some parents that will have their child finish 8th or 9th grade so they can continue attending high school while still eligible foruceration benefits beginning September 2017 For more information please visit our website corningtownsite@gmail.com
