Corning, New York is a town in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. The name Corning comes from the Cornish language word "corinion." The first settler in what is now Corning was Moses Crane who arrived in 1786. He built a cabin on the west side of the Susquehanna River and named it Crane's Ferry after himself and his brother John Crane. The first store in Corning opened in 1814 by Isaac Fenton. In 1827, David Burt established a sawmill and gristmill at the mouth of the Susquehanna River. By 1830, there were five stores and twenty-one residents in Corning. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), most of Corning sided with the Union while its mayor chose to remainneutral. However, some people did support Confederate General Robert Ewell during this time period due to their sympathies for slavery or their dislike of northern troops stationed in Chenango County In 1865, Union forces burned down all but one of Burt's stores as part of an effort to destroy evidence that they had been aiding Confederates during the war Burt rebuilt two stores within a year and reopened them as business operations continued until around 1880 when manufacturing stopped altogether due to competition from abroad In 1898, George Washington Carver founded Carver's Agricultural Research Laboratory here which later became Cornell University By 1930 there were just six businesses left operating outtown from downtown Corning with only one remaining grocery store catering to local residents In 1951, Harlan Stephenson opened up what is today Clarkson’s Supermarket here which has been serving local customers since 1955
The town of Corning was first settled in 1811 by the Palmyra family. They were the first white settlers in what is now Corning, New York. The town grew rapidly and by 1846 had a population of over 100 people. It was renamed Corning in 1881 after Samuel Fenton, an American industrialist and philanthropist who donated land for a cotton gin and other mills in the town.
