In 1618 another Englishman named Nicholas Sarum built a log cabin near where the current Corning Building stands. This building served as a trading post until around 1635 when it burned down due to Indians raiding it periodically. In 1795 Lieutenant Colonel Benedict Arnold organized an expedition against General George Washington's forces at Trenton Valley duringthe American Revolution. The British were able to take over this strategic location after they destroyed most of New Netherland including Newark and Rochester in what is known as the Battle of Princeton (1794). After this victory Arnold renamed his new territory Upper Canada and set up military posts here for protection from British attacks along with Fort Niagara (later Niagara Falls) across Lake Ontario After Confederation in 1867 Corning became part of New York State under the provisions of the Constitution of New York which gave its citizens voting rights and limited suffrage to white men only . In 1881 however local officials decided to change their name to Albany because that was then how much attention Albany County was getting from state legislators outside of its borders In 1922 Corning merged with five other towns in Tioga County (Albany City, Auburn Hills, Brighton Beach/Brooklyn Heights/East Flatbush/Manhattan Beach), forming what would become known as Syracuse – Syracuseburgh or simply Syracuse . During this time many factories closed down throughout America due to World War II but Syracuse remained largely unaffected as aluminum production continued until 1946 when production peaked thanks to wartime shortages A significant portion of this aluminum output went into making tanks for Allied forces during World War II During recent years there has been growth among professional athletes living within walking distanceof stadiums such as Madison Square Garden which has led some locals to referto themselves as "Giants Fans." In addition three colleges located within striking distance have attracted large numbers students: Cornell University (+1 million students since 2000), Binghamton University (+2 million students since 2006), and SUNY Buffalo (+3 million students since 2008). All three schools are members-affiliate institutions with larger universities located elsewhere in NYS
