This new design would allow him to shoot accurately without having to hold onto his target all day long. Captain Fenton's initial invention became known as Custer Stock #2; however, it was not until 1892 that he patented this modification specifically designed for use with muzzleloaders. Corning, New York (known historically as Corning City) is a town in Madison County, New York, United States. The population was 9,693 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from the Iroquois word koronkawa meaning "to turn over," and narwanda meaning "a place to store goods." The first settler in what is now Corning was James Mather who arrived in 1795. He named his farm after his friend and mentor Ebenezer Scudder. By 1800 the town had two stores and six families were living there. A post office operated here from 1807 to 1817; it was renamed Corning in 1821 when it moved to its present location on the west side of the Mohawk River. The first school in this area was built by Reverend George Houghton in 1811-12. In 1814 Stephen Morton founded a flour mill near where today's Main Street meets the river. In 1865, when Morrill Land Act took effect, Corona became part of Indian Territory under US jurisdiction. In 1886 Cornish Manufacturing Company began operations with an armory on Main Street which still stands today as Cornish Industries Incorporated). This company manufactured cannons for Union troops during the American Civil War (the company produced more than 2 million cannonballs). After World War II many manufacturing companies closed down due to lack of demand or competition from foreign countries; however Cornish Industries continued production until its closure in 1984. Today much of what used to be downtown Corning has been demolished including most of the original buildings dating back to before 1830s such as Scudder's Store and Mechanics' Hall which are now just foundations standing next to each other surrounded by highways and development that has replaced them completely. However much of what remains can be seen through various historic Preservation District tours offered throughout year at various locations around town including: main square (site where Scudder's store once stood), old brick church (built about 1840), cornmarket building (originally a slave market owned by John Welch), Gates Mill Ruins (former site of Gates Mills located off Northgate Avenue across from current day Monroe High School), Loyalist Cemetery east of town line (), old jail complex northwest corner Of Town Square () and old post office building ().
In 1874, the town of Corning was organized as a village. In 1907, it became a city and in 1918, it became a state capital. In 1957, the town was renamed Corning-on-Hudson to honor its history and culture.
