Corning, New York is a city in the U.S. state of New York and the seat of Greene County. The population was 103,603 at the 2010 census and it is the ninth-most populous city in New York State. By 1840, Kendall had built a frame courthouse on his farmstead west of town which served as court house until 1870 when it was replaced by the present building that stands today. During World War I, General Motors set up a plant here to make parts for their planes; this plant produced more than 1 million articles per day before production ceased during World War II due to bombing raids over America by Germany. After hostilities ended, GM reopened its plant here but shifted all manufacturing to Mexico City because labor costs there were lower than in North America. The last GM car rolled off an assembly line here on October 26th 1959 -more than 50 years after it first went into production! In 1957,Corning became home to IBM’s Advanced Research Laboratory (ARL) – one of two such laboratories operated by IBM across both coasts at that time; ARL was responsible for developing new computer systems and products including mainframe computers and minicomputers used throughout industry until they were supplanted by personal computers late in the decade (see also “IBM Arl History: 1956-2006”).
