The first Europeans to visit the area were Dutch colonists who established a trading post in 1624 near present-day Corning. In 1714, General George Washington and his army passed through the area on their way to battle Fort Niagara. General John Burgoyne's British forces destroyed the forts at Saratoga and Harlem Heights before retreating northwest into Canada. Corning became an incorporated village on December 12, 1827. On July 30, 1828 it reported that its total population was 1,521 On December 12, 1827 Corning voted to incorporate as a town under the leadership of Supervisor David Fenton. The first meeting of Town Board took place on January 14th of that year with Supervisor Fenton presiding over the board members In 1830 Arapaho Chief Black Hills attacked and burned down two white homes in what is now known as Black Hawk Township while settlers were away attending a fair in Dryden Arapaho raiding parties continued sporadically until 1840 when they all stopped after Ulysses S Grant ordered militia patrols to suppress them Afterward most raids or skirmishes ended by 1850 with few incidents taking place during that time These events led European immigrants such as Nathan Hale and Elijah Hicks to settle permanently inCorning from upstate New York mainly because there were no Indian attacks reported during this period

Corning, New York is a city in Greene County, New York, United States. The population was 853 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Greene County after Syracuse. The first settlers were Dutch and English who arrived in 1624 and 1627, respectively. Thecity was founded by Nicholas Corning on April 12, 1807 as a small settlement on what is now State Route 11 north of the present day town of Syracuse. It grew rapidly thanks to its location near two major transportation routes: One ran from Albany to Buffalo and the other ran from Canandaigua to Rochester. In 1821, the village became an incorporated town with a population of 2,000 people. By 1860 it had grown to 3,000 people and by 1900 it had reached 7,000 people. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), Corning played an important role in support of Union forces during both campaigns through its production of munitions and transportation materials such as saltpeter and alumina. After 1865, however,Corning lost much of its civil engineering activity due to competition from Empire Company which built more efficient mills located further away from cities for processing textiles such as cotton or linen. However most heavy manufacturing remains active today in Corning including agriculture (farming produce), construction (manufacturing goods) and chemicals companies like Dow Chemical Corporation which are headquartered there since 1911

In 1851, the town became the birthplace of Cornelius Vanderbilt, founder of the Vanderbilt family fortune. In 1898, Corning was renamed after its first mayor, Hiram S. Cadwallader.
