Duryea's Ferry also became one of the earliest commercial stops on what is now known as the Erie Canal. After years of growth and development, Corning experienced its first major flood in 1865 when water levels reached above normal for that time of year. The flooding caused extensive damage but no human fatalities occurred as a result; this event is generally considered to be one of the most successful engineering feats ever accomplished by man in terms of controlling water levels within limits while still allowing crops and other essential objects inside safe boundaries
