One of the earliest known gun targets in Corning was a cannonball found on the property of Dr. Samuel Morse in 1827. The target was shot at with a rifle and it killed two deer, but it is not clear if the bullet that hit it was fired from a rifle or a pistol. In 1845, John J. Brown & Co., which later became Colt Firearms, built a firearms plant inCorning and began production of revolvers there in 1846. In 1896, Winchester Ammunition manufactures their first bullets in Corning. The population of Corning grew rapidly after World War II as the town attracted people for its access to fresh water resources and its manufacturing capabilities; Corning has remained an important center for industry and commerce since then.
Corning, New York is a city in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. The population was 31,619 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Monroe County and home to Erie Community College. The area that would become Corning was first settled by Europeans in 1614 when John Tryon founded what is now Rochester, New York as a trading post on the Genesee River. Tryon named his new settlement after his native country, England. In 1786, George Washington arrived in western New York and founded Kingston on the west side of Niagara Falls; this later became Syracuse. In 1814, Joshua Latham organized a group of farmers and traders who formed the village of Corning on Otsego Creek near present-day Buffalo Gap in Monroe County. The town began to grow rapidly due to its location close to waterways and sources of raw materials such as copper ore and tin canals for manufacturing purposes. In 1824, James Kieft acquired 8 square miles (21 km²) around what is now Niagara Falls from General Andrew Jackson for $5,000 – making it one of the largest land acquisitions in United States history at that time – makingCorning an important center for trade with Canada and Europe. Before taking office as President Ulysses S Grant's Secretary of War in 1865, he visited Corning several times including once when he built a shack on Governors Island outfitted with all necessary amenities for living including indoor plumbing and an oven/stove combination which still operates today as part of ranger duty at Grays Harbor National Park

The NRA has been trying to get a ban on assault weapons since the early 1990s. In 1996, they successfully lobbied for a bill that would have banned all handguns in the United States. This was met with opposition from the gun lobby and eventually the bill was repealed. The NRA then tried to get a ban on all long guns in 2006, but this also failed.

The city of Corning, New York was chartered on February 19, 1814 by act of the State Legislature. The town was named for General Simon Corning who had led a unit of militia against an Indian attack in 1811. The first settler in the town was Isaac Stevens, who built a cabin on the east bank of the Susquehanna River. By 1823, there were 10 residents in Corning and it had a school, post office and jail. On January 1, 1830, the town became part of Erie County. On November 15, 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected President of the United States and on December 6 he assumed office as America'sth president. On January 20 he signed into law the "Internal Revenue Act" which increased revenue from corporate taxes to pay for war purposes. In 1862-1865 Corning fought in three major engagements: Battle of Gettysburg; Battle of Monmouth Junction; and Siege at Cold Harbor. In 1865-1866 Corning played an important role in helping to build up the Western army during the American Civil War by providing lumber and other supplies to soldiers fighting at nearby battlefields such as Appomattox Court House and Petersburg Heights
