Corning, New York is a town in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 5,819 at the 2010 census. It is the largest town in Chenango County and the county seat of Chenango. The townsite of Corning was laid out by George Haines on December 10, 1825. The village of Corning was platted in 1828 by Elias Dearborn and James Dearborn. The name "Corning" first appeared on a map dated May 6, 1830. The first post office in Corning was established on November 14, 1836, by John Dickey. At the time it was the only post office in the town. In 1840–41 Gouverneur Morris carried out an extensive land purchases to form what is now Chenango County; this included most of what is now Corning Township and parts of what are now West Seneca Village and East Aurora Village. Morrissons purchase extended into what are now North Aurora and South Aurora Villages as well (now part of Guilderland). In 1846 Isaac Norris opened a general store in downtown CorNING which became an important center for local trade until it closed its doors around 1980 due to economic factors within that decade alone In 1850 Samuel Atherton laid out what is today North Aurora Village with his own home lot adjoining General Store Lot #1 – Athertons’ acreage formed much of that present-day village block today In 1857 Augustus Saratoga built himself a large frame house on Main Street (now First Avenue) across from Greenbush Cemetery – Saratoga’s property still stands adjacent to First Avenue today . On October 3rd 1861 Captain Archibald Butt founded Buttstown which would become one of many villages incorporated into Chenango County during the same year Also establishd that year were: Albion , Dunkirk , Geneva , Hastingsburgh (later changed to Thamesburgh), Highland Park (now accomodated within current day Tioga), Lathamville (later renamed Elmira), Niskayuna (later renamed Kingston ), Peekskill - all located east or northeast of where they stand currently

In 1855, Corning joined with other towns in what is now upstate New York to create the Finger Lakes Region; this helped contribute to Corning's status as one of the most important economic centers in central New York. The city also developed a large infrastructure including a water system and schools that remain important today.
