It is part of the Syracuse-Oneida-Albany Metropolitan Statistical Area. The word "corning" comes from the Mohawk word "koronach," meaning "to harden." The first settlement in this area was made by a party of English settlers who traveled down the Mohawk River to what is now Corning, New York in 1624. They named their new settlement after John Corning, an Englishman who had settled in what is now Albany, New York earlier that year. In 1795, some Yankees led by Levi Coffin founded a small town on high ground east of today's City Hall Square called Orangeburgh and began trading with local farmers and fur traders. In 1802 they moved their business headquarters to what is now City Hall Square and changed their name to Corning. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson invaded Canada during his unsuccessful War for Independence and encountered heavy resistance along the way. When he reached Lake Ontario he ordered his troops to march southward towards Niagara Falls but were stopped at Lockport by Brigadier General Nicholas Herriot near what are now Purchase and Buffalo Streets in downtown Corning. After days of fighting that resulted in more than 100 deaths including Jackson himself (he was only moderately wounded), he retreated back upriver without further incident. After the war ended there was much contention over control of Niagara Falls between Great Britain and America as both nations rebuilt themselves following its defeat. In 1828 Canadian forces under Sir John Aird captured Fort Erie after an eight-month siege while American forces under Colonel Augustus Griggs abandoned buildings at Onondaga County Park across from today'sCorning Golf Course before retreating back upriver again without confronting Canadian forces directly; this event became known as The Battle of Byram Hills or simply The battle of Niagara due to its location relative to other major engagements fought during the war elsewhere on Western Canada). The town continued thriving even though much land around it was sold off for development following independence; however most residents left for better opportunities farther west when those opportunities opened up. However one large building still stands today – Town Hall – which served as a meeting place for all aspects of government until it burned down in 1957 giving rise to myths about how town hall could have been saved if only someone had listened to Mayor George Sylvester’s advice not to rebuild because “a new Town Hall would be expensive …we can do it cheaper next time” (although no evidence exists supporting this claim). A post office also operated here until 1911 when mail service was discontinued due to budget cuts within Postmaster General Alexander Graham Bell’s administration which paralleled similar decisions made throughout Upstate New York by then Governor Timothy Tompkins Jr.. Then starting around 1915 or 1916 a series of stores started opening up selling items such as groceries (including beer) and hardware among others which grew into what we know today as Blockbuster Video locations across from downtown square–one block north/west of where present day North Plaza Shopping Center sitsToday’s plaza once housed two separate schools: One for boys (now known as Canandaigua Elementary School) located immediately northwest corner between Third & Fourth streets NE side ; And One for girls (now known as Girls High School) located just east side between First & Second streets NE side . Prices on groceries here varied considerably based on location within blocks radius ..
