Corning, New York is a city in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 19,711 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Erie County after Buffalo. Corning was founded by Abram K. Cornell and others in 1847 as a small trading post on the Genesee River near modern day Amherstburg. The name "Cornell" comes from Cornish immigrants who settled in this area in the mid-19th century. The town of Corning was chartered on April 12, 1847 by the state of New York as part of Niagara County. On November 5, 1861, it became part of the new Ontario county and was renamedcorning after Abram K. Cornell's family home on Westbrook Road (now Westmorland Avenue), now within City Limits of Amherstburg Proper; he had died two years earlier while living in that house with his wife Sarah Burtis and their children Esther Ann (born December 12, 1846) and John Charles (born January 3, 1850). In 1865–1868 it was again made an independent town but returned to Niagara County when that agency merged into Erie County on February 14, 1968. On October 6 1935 a tornado touched down near downtown Corning injuring several people before dissipating about one mile away; it has been rated as one of the most severe Tornadoes ever registered in New York State In 1940–1941 three local newspapers were published: "The Courier", "The Times Herald" & "The Daily News". They are all gone now but their archives are available online . The first issue of "The Courier" appeared on October 2 1840 from a building located east side Main Street between Third and Fifth Streets which had been built for Mr Gouverneur Morris who served as sheriff of Niagara County during the early days when there were only six towns in that county After serving briefly as editor under Elisha Graydon Cushing later took over full editorship until his death March 25 1920 aged 78 years old .....In politics Stroud had many friends among eastern Republicans who backed him during his campaigns against Morrissette ....Cushing also donated $500 to help finance Stroud's education at Cornell University Law School where he graduated summa cum laude with an LLM degree ....Stroud then practiced law with Waddell & McCloy from 1942 to 1945 before entering government service.. During World War II he served as special assistant to Attorney General James Byrnes . He retired from government service following President Harry S Truman’s inauguration upon taking office .....He still resides at 710 Westbrook Road corNING NY 10458 Cornell played a significant role in American history both before and after World War I through its contributions to engineering and other endeavors such as developing metallurgy techniques for artillery ammunition and becoming known for its architecture including designing some of America's first skyscrapers including One hundred fifty Second Street –the world's tallest tower at that time -and dozens more buildings around Buffalo., , Although not originally established within what is today calledBuffalo proper (), they quickly became wellknown thereabouts because they produced so much high quality munitions used during World War I (). Many residents moved here during or immediately afterwards.* *Many subsequent manufacturers – notably BASF – also relocated their operations here followingWorld WarI *.
