Corning, New York is a city in upstate New York, United States. It is the seat of Onondaga County. The population was 2,531 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler of the area now known as Corning was Captain Benjaminias and his wife who arrived in 1786. They built a log cabin in what is now the town of Orchard Park on the east side of Cayuga Lake. By 1800, they had founded what became Corning on land that they acquired from the Mohawk tribe by Treaty of Utica. The town was named after Nicholas-Jacques Caron (1756–1826), a French general and statesman who served as Governor of Canada from 1821 to 1825 and then as Minister to Spain from 1830 to 1832. In 1812, when it was made part of Ontario County, Corning had a population numbering only 6 people! But within 10 years its population had reached 100! During most of its history an agricultural community based on raising livestock and potatoes flourished; however during prohibition times many businesses closed due to lack of customers or Prohibition taxes which were paid by farmers but not consumption tax (which applied to all merchants). Thereafter until recently there has been little manufacturing activity except for some small businesses in textiles and plastics especially around Onondaga Hill where glassblowing takes place today using natural gas produced from shale deposits near Syracuse. In 1916-1917 one thousand men worked at two sites creating ten miles long belt between Canandaigua and Syracuse employing over 1,500 men making Amish country shoes here also; these were called "the belts" because they were used primarily for transportation purposes not for production like shoes today
