Corning, New York is a town in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 11,831 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Chenango County. The first post office in Corning was established on December 12, 1825. The current post office building was built in 1912 and is located at 5th Avenue and Main Street. The town was founded by Nicholas Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti on October 17, 1827 as part of an effort to create a new village to serve the growing industry around Buffalo Creek. However, due to the Panic of 1907 and consequent economic decline in Buffalo Creek, much of Corning's infrastructure collapsed; only two churches remain from when it had over fifty. In 1916, General Electric began construction on its largest factory in the area which would eventually be named GE Hynix after its founder George Eastman (the founder of Kodak). The company moved into their present headquarters in 1984. In 1957-1959 GE produced a model T-bird for Ford Motor Company that has been considered one of the most influential cars ever made with its unique "T" design that still remains popular to this day
The town of Corning, New York was founded by a group of settlers in 1814. The town was named after the cornice or topographical feature on the hill which had been suggested to the pioneers by Captain John H.Corning, who lived in what is now Niagara Falls. The first local elections were held in 1816 and James Fenton, a surveyor and landowner, served as mayor. In 1819, the town passed an act providing for educational purposes and it became a village in 1828. In 1830, Corning voted to become part of the new State of New York and the town's population grew rapidly from its initial handful of residents to over 1,000 by 1840. The population reached 2,500 by 1860 and 5,000 by 1880. The Census Bureau reported that there were 11 schools in 1888-89 and 14 churches then-in addition to several businesses including a millinery shop and two hotels (the First Presbyterian Church on Main Street and the Second Presbyterian Church on Salina Street). By 1900 there were only six schools remaining along with one business closed down due to prohibitionism (banned alcohol). However, despite this decline in activity due mostly to demographic changes outside the community rather than any economic misfortune such as Prohibition repeal or consolidation within it – Corning still enjoyed modest prosperity until World War I when things went seriously wrong for it: 30% of all men working in agriculture left during that conflict while industrial production increased 50%. With manufacturing outstripping agricultural production throughout most of America during World War I; many farmers simply abandoned their land altogether; Corning’s mills reeled under financial burden unable even maintain pace with demand while prices for corn continued creeping up as high as $2 per bushel/bag at times! However things started turnaround somewhat around 1920 when profits from some mines turned into investment capital enabling businessman Augustus Biddle Jr., son of Augustus Biddle Sr.,to purchase all but one school buildings brick by brick starting construction on what would become known as “The Gilded Age Schoolhouse” (now part of Elmhurst College). This revived economic activity soon led him to construct other public buildings including a library/ reading room/firehall/grant office complex (now Holy Name University) as well as starter homes for workers Opportunity Housing Corporation located just off Oneida Avenue adjacent Toomey Road; originally intended solely for recently arrived Polish immigrants however over time became more general housing destination catering especially towards blue collar types displaced during war era give away programs like Food Stamps etc.. Unfortunately development patterns changed again following deindustrialization not long after World War II leading ultimately to increasing poverty level among these groups culminating with riots taking place throughout Syracuse metropolitan area mainly affecting inner city neighborhoods near airports beginning around 1960 concurrent with overall social unrest across North America caused largely by newly emergent global revolutionary forces
