The original Cohoes, New York expansion began in 1864 when the town of Cohoes was created from portions of the towns of Auburn and Northvale. The town was named for General Sir Henry Clinton, who fought in the American Revolution. The first courthouse was built in 1868 and by 1890, the population had grown to over 1,500 people. In 1907, a new courthouse was built on Main Street and it remained in use until 1923 when it was replaced by the current building. In 1912, Cohoes voters passed a ordinance allowing for the erection of churches within the town limits. The first church constructed in Cohoes was Baptist Church on Elmwood Avenue. In 1914, Congregational Church also opened its doors in Cohoes. In 1950, there were two additions to the village of Cohoes - First Presbyterian Church (now Emmanuel) on Orange Avenue and Second United Methodist Church (now Trinity Lutheran) on Third Street. The churches continued to be used interchangeably until 1978 when First Presbyterian closed its doors while Second United Methodist converted into a community center which remains operational today as part of Main Streetscape project that is ongoing throughout downtown Cochrane
Cohoes, New York is a small town in upstate New York. It was originally settled by the Mohawk people in the 17th century and has been known as a lumber and agricultural center since the 18th century. The town was incorporated in 1892. Cohoes is located on the border of Seneca County and Ontario County. The population of Cohoes was 37,174 at the 2010 census. The Mohawk people were one of the six nations that made up the Iroquois Confederacy. Their territory extended from what is now Erie, PA to upstate New York, including much of what is today Cohoes and Woodstock counties. When Andrew Jackson was elected president in 1828, he chose not to seek re-election because he believed that he would have to work with all six of the Iroquois nations if he sought office again. As a result, Jackson left office without ever having met with any of them. In 1785, when developers began to buildroads through this area for transporting goods across country, they named their new community "Cohoes". This name originated with John Collins who had come overland from Ulster in Ireland during the Great Famine years of 1690-1693 and surveyed these parts for a road company called Collins & Company Ltd.. In honor of his contributions to this area, local businesses continued to call themselves Collinsville until relatively recently – something which can still be seen throughout most of Seneca County where Cohoes sits - "Collinsville" Rd., "Collins Ave.", etc.). The early residents here were mainly farmers who raised corn and other crops; however, later some became involved in lumbering and manufacturing as well. Manufacturing here included toolmakers such as Daniel Haggerty Sr., Samuel Haggerty Jr., John Laughlin (the father-in-law of James Jardine), Hiram Peck (the founder/owner/director/manager/founder/director of Peck's Brewery) among others. In addition to its farming and industrial roots however, Cohoes also played an important role within federally funded Indian education programs during the late 19th century; especially those run by Paths & Means School District No 2 (later renamed James Purdy School District). Today many cohosians are descendants or first generation immigrants from various parts around world who have taken root here- making it one RHP powerhouse among small towns across America! As part as its industrious past though, Cohoes has also been notably home to some very notable individuals – both livingand dead-. Cohoes, New York is a town in Clinton County, New York, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. The name of Cohoes comes from the Mohawk word Kōhēʼahe or "flowing water." It was first established as a hamlet on the north bank of the Hudson River by French and Dutch settlers in 1755. The town was incorporated on February 14, 1824. It became part of New York City in 1898. On December 12, 1941, during World War II, Cohoes was hit by an atomic bomb dropped by the United States on Hiroshima. The bomb killed most of the innocent people living within its limits including many local civilians and members of the military who were based there. As a result of this bombing that took place within its boundaries it has been called "Hiroshima Town" to this day. The town is located just east of Interstate 990 which runs through it and forms part of the Mohawk Valley metropolitan area. This makes it easily accessible for residents from all over central New York as well as beyond since it has no real downtown district like some other towns in Clinton County such as Schenectady or Utica where large malls and shopping centers exist close to I-990 and other major highways
