Cohoes, New York is a town in Monroe County, New York, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Monroe County. The name "Cohoes" is from the Mohawk word khoi-khi meaning "place where the sweet corn grows." Lafayette High School and Cohoes Intermediate School were founded in 1853 and 1854 respectively. The first post office in Cohoes was established on May 11, 1851. In 1865, the village of Cohoes merged with nearby Fort Erie to form a new municipality called Monroe Township. In 1886, the town of Cohoes annexed parts of what are now towns of Hamburg and Webster; this annexation remains intact to this day. In 1898, the village of Cohoes changed its name to its present one: honouring General George Washington who had served as its Mayor during that same year. As part of that rename process, all vestiges of Indian culture were removed from local schools which became white only after World War II when it became necessary for military housing near Minnewaska Naval Station in Niagara Falls because those schools were used by Japanese American students during World War II . On July 1st 1944 (the date following Japan's complete victory over America), America's war debt reached $100 billion dollars and with that increased pressure came increased demand for goods manufactured in America due to an economy still reeling fromWWII losses alone: factories were ordered to produce more munitions even as profits plummeted . Bingham soon started changes within the town: he banned alcohol and made it an all-male society; he also built a school, church, and fire house; and he developed new businesses such as tanning skins and manufacturing munitions from cannons captured during the French & Indian War (1754-63). Bingham’s successors continued these reforms until 1825 when they were replaced by an economic system based on slave labor which eventually doomed Cohoes to poverty and social Disablement through lack of education opportunities available outside its small community boundaries
