Cohoes, New York is a small town in upstate New York on the Mohawk River. It is located about an hour north of Albany and an hour east of Buffalo. The population was 1,149 at the 2000 census and 1,471 at the 2010 census. The town was first settled in 1795 by Germans. In 1824, it became part of the Erie Canal Zone. Cohoes is one of three villages in town-the others being North Tonawanda and South Tonawanda. The village has a post office, store, barbershop/beauty shop, restaurants and several churches. The first settler in Cohoes was Nicholas Hague who arrived around 1800. He platted out a piece of land that became what is now known as Hague Hill on August 20th, 1802; it lay just south of present day Cohoes Road between suspicion Brook trout stream to its north and Dutchman's Creek to its south-northwest. The original name for the settlement was "White Plains". Cohoes had two schools when it incorporated as a Village on January 15th 1892: Drury Academy (later renamed Valhalla) which opened in 1892 and closed in 1907; Middle School (now renamed Slingerland) which opened on October 12th 1902; also called Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church which served as both school and parish center until 1954 when it was sold by order of Bishop John J. Myers to Holy Cross Sisters for use as their convent., St Vincent de Paul Parish No 2 (now known Monastery), first established in 1898 before amalgamating with other parishes into Holy Cross Parish No 2 following an Order from Bishop Myers ; First Congregational church constructed circa 1850 but abandoned after fire destroyed building ca 1904-1905; Second Congregational church built circa 1910 but abandoned after fire destroyed building ca 1912-. After World War II there were no more schools serving the village so elementary students attended either Sacred Heart or Our Lady Of Victory elementary schools located about five miles away while high school students attend nearby North Tonawanda High School or nearby South Tonawanda High School where they are joined by vocational programs such as engineering, carpentry, welding etc.. There have been recent efforts made by some residents to reopen former Elementary/Secondary Schools within the confines of cohoes village limits though progress has been slow due mainly to lack access to necessary permits On July 8th 1952 an event took place that would forever change Cohoes lore when communist Liu Shaoqi delivered his famous speech from atop Fort Ticonderoga across Lake George at which time many people throughout upstate New York rose up against communism with even violence erupting at one point resulting in injuries including death! This event helped spur development within Cohoes towards becoming an economically prosperous community typified by its wide variety of businesses today including computer software development companies such as Microsoft Research & Microsoft Excelsior Software Inc., clothing retailers such as Sears & Roebuck & Co.; real estate firms such as Lennar Homes Incorporated - formerly Hammerstein Properties - then Federated Realty Corporation - now Allied Real Estate Group LLC.; steel manufacturers like Bethlehem Steel Corp., Ulysses S. Cohoes, New York is a small town in the Finger Lakes region of central New York. It is located on the east bank of the Mohawk River and it was founded in 1789 by Loyalists who had fled Pennsylvania during the American Revolution. The town became an incorporated village in 1848. In 1916 Cohoes merged with neighboring Webster to form the current municipality. Prior to its incorporation as a village, Cohoes was one of many towns in what is now Monroe County that were part of the Mohawk Valley Preserve from 1784 to 1800. This provided for subsistence farming and hunting rights along the riverbanks and also allowed for trade with other parts of New York state. As a result, Cohoes has a rich colonial history that has been preserved through museums, historical buildings and cultural events such as concerts and art exhibitions.
Cohnes (1912-2002) was an American historian who specialized in the history of New York City. He taught at Columbia University and is now a professor emeritus at Syracuse University.
