Cohoes, New York is a small town in upstate New York. It is located on the banks of the Chenango River, about 25 miles north of Albany. Cohoes was founded by Mohawk Indians in 1794. The name comes from the word "cohoga" meaning "a place for making cakes." Cohoes became an agricultural center and was known for its corn, soybeans, apples, and hops production. In 1849 Cohoes was incorporated as a village. After years of growth and development, the population of Cohoes peaked at 1,500 in 1910 but then slowly declined until it dropped to less than 100 in 2000. Today, there are only a few hundred residents living within the town limits. At its peak during the late 1800s and early 1900s, Cohoes was one of the most significant towns in upstate New York; however, today it is struggling to remain atop its hill despite being classified as an “agricultural community” with some high-technology businesses located there such as Hewlett-Packard Co.(HP) headquarters and Intel(INTC) Xeon(R) Processor Village locations among others. The history of Cohoes begins withMohawk Indians who settled here around 1794 after migrating from Canada following the French and Indian War (1754-63). They named their landing site 'Cohoga' which means 'a place for making cake'. Over time they began cultivating crops such as corn, soybeans, apples and hops while also constructing wigwams or houses out of logs to reside in during winter months when hunting season would be active nearby. By 1850 there were over 350 people living here according to records kept by local officials including officers from Albany's post office which served as their social life/ festivals etc.. However by 1920 only 95 residents remained within town limits - this had increased to just 30 by 1970 when census results revealed that even fewer people actually resided inside town limits anymore due largely to rising prices for farmland around hereabouts which has since become increasingly difficult to maintain given changes in transportation patterns across state lines etc.. Today what little remains of Cohoes is notable primarily for its rich history associated with agriculture - with many buildings still standing dating back to its early days including: the old courthouse built1849-51; pioneer farmhouse built c 1855; Methodist Episcopal Zion Church built 1865; Post Office constructed 1902; sawmill & gristmill operated 1899-1910; blacksmith shop & forge 1868-69; store & restaurant opened 1916 on Main Street near where present day Pillsbury Avenue meets Route 9A (now called Main Street East); school closed 1976 but fortunately remains extant along with partially restored barn/creek house used 1922-1966 as storage building attached thereto originally erected 1949 now known as homeerto Grannis family philanthropist Anthony Grannis Sr., his wife Loisetta Grannis Museum restoration project $5 million started 2009 funded fully via private donations

Cohoes was a small town in upstate New York, located about 15 miles (24 km) north of the city of Buffalo. The population at the time of its incorporation as a village was 1,594 people. It became an incorporated town on April 12, 1868. In 1916, Cohoes annexed the adjoining village of North Tonawanda and the hamlet of South Tonawanda.
