Cohoes, New York is a small town in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. The population was just over 6,000 as of the 2010 census. It's an agricultural and rural community that lies on the eastern edge of Mohawk Valley. The valley is bisected by the Mohawk River, which forms its southern border. Cohoes sits on the north side of this river and has a strong connection to Iroquois history and culture. The first Europeans to visit Cohoes were French traders in 1614 who named it La Pointe-à-Cohoes (the cape). In 1795, Englishman John Armstrong founded what would become Armstrong Brewing Company here. In 1847, local entrepreneur Nicholas Dixsen erected a grist mill on the east bank of the Mohawk River opposite Cohoes proper. This became one of America's first commercial breweries and helped spur economic development in nearby Utica and Niagara Falls. In 1905, Cohoes voters passed a referendum authorizing city government with a Mayor/Council system instead of a traditional village form of government used elsewhere in Upstate New York at that time. This change led to more centralized control over local affairs by Cohoes' civic leaders which helped make it one of America's most progressive towns during its early years following World War I (1918-1945). During World War II (1939-1945), much activity took place within town limits due to military forces quartered adjacent to or surrounding Cohoes during their air raids against German targets throughout Upstate New York; many buildings within town were destroyed or damaged as result including Cahootsie Millinery store building located between Main Street & Genesee Street after being hit by an incendiary bomb from a B-17 Flying Fortress while parked outside for fuel storage purposes late afternoon on February 10th 1945; all 8 female employees insideattsured their own safety when windows shattered resulting in them being thrown out onto main street where they remained unharmed surrounded by high flames until forced back into burning building by firefighters under heavy fire until safely evacuated later that evening without loss or injury to any personnel involved; damage estimated at $20,000 including special effects still extant today inside former mill structure...This bombing remains one of history’s most dramatic industrial tragedies ever experienced in upstate new york

A piece of rifle history is that during World War I, an American machinegun known as the M1 Carbine was acquired by the British forces in 1915 through secret negotiations between America and Great Britain. It entered service with Great Britain’s military forces in 1916 and saw action against German troops throughout World War I
