Cohoes, New York is a town in Dutchess County, New York, United States. The population was 7,379 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albany–Schenectady–Troy Metropolitan Statistical Area. The towns of Cohoes and Ardebil are also located in Dutchess County. The villages of Baldwin and Gatesville are also located within the town of Cohoes. The first European to visit Cohoes was Giovanni da Verrazzano on October 5, 1524. He named it "Verazzano" after his ship "Verrazano". In 1614 John Montresor founded a ferryboat company which transported goods over the Hudson River from Poughkeepsie to Albany and then on to Schenectady. In 1764-1765 Nicholas Saroyan built a small house on what is now Route 10 near present day Little Falls for his father-in-law Peter Saroyan who ran one of the two stores in town until he closed it down in 1799 because of financial problems connected withoriental trade going through that area at that time. In 1812 Isaac Rogers founded a gristmill here which still stands today as Rogers Mill #2; it had been demolished by 1901 but has been rebuilt many times since then (most recently in 2008). During World War II (1939-1945) local residents took up arms against Japanese invaders and helped form the locally recruited 315th Infantry Regiment called Task Force Higgins before being shipped off to fight along side Allied forces throughout Europe including Normandy, Belgium and Italy where they played an important role as scouts and Headquarters Battalion Commander’s men during Operation Market Garden (October 1944 – April 1945). After hostilities ended local residents returned home mostly due to lack of opportunities available back east while most Germans living west of Mohawk Road assimilated into American society very quickly; however some did return such as Jack Engelhardt who reopened Saroyan’s store after World War II although initially only doing so for limited hours each week because there were no longer any jobs available back east despite efforts by government officials to create new ones.......In 1957 post office operations relocated from their original building on Main Street (now First Congregational Church) across Railroad Avenue from High School into their current site just northwest of I-87/I-390 about 1/4 mile southwest corner I-87 exit gates.........Cohoes community hall opened its doors Oct 2nd 1959 after years renovation project started by Mrs Eileen Moriarty with support from Friends group............Population growth during 20th century led to increased need for schools & other infrastructure not only here but throughout village & surrounding areas making it difficult for old buildings etc., which became known as “crowded city”.......The Village Board voted Nov 3rd 1955 to buy former chicken coop run by Gertrude Kappenstein for $8,000 becoming first public use structure in village.....On Dec 8th 1956 school board approved request by Mayor Harry Hickey for $6000 donation towards construction cost of new high school building.......On Jan 14th 1957 groundbreaking occurred for new high school building which would become home to many local businesses including Thomas Edison Chevrolet dealership...................After more than 50 years plying its trade primarily within limits set by founders this small community has enjoyed significant changes both inside & outside its walls..................Today's cohoes......As one might expect given its historyCPUE business incubation program provides unique opportunity focus development......Many notable people have made their mark or fought major roles here either past or present..........................It's clear that cohoes retains much character & presence even though recent events have taken away some aspects...........Most importantly cohoes family remains committed to providing quality education opportunities.............................................

Cohoes, New York is a town in the U.S. state of New York. The population was 10,653 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Mohawk River near the Canada–US border and is part of the Erie–Lackawanna County metropolitan area. The name Cohoes derives from a word meaning "hollow" or "burrow." The first Europeans to visit what is now Cohoes were French settlers in 1624 who named it La Pointe de la Hache (Hole of the Knife). In 1627, English colonists by the name of Carteret arrived and began construction of Fort Orange on what is now Quaker Hill outside of Cohoesburgh. The fort served as an artillery post during King George's War (1774-1775). In 1792, while under British rule, all Indian villages were ordered destroyed by order of General James Wolfe after he had discovered they were harboring American rebels. This action led to some tension between Iroquois and white residents which increased when troops burned homes in retaliation for Wolfe's destruction efforts. After Confederation, New York became a state in 1815 and through its territory extended into Canada from what are now northeastern Ontario to southeastern Quebec. In 1846, following annexation by Indiana as part of that state, Cohoes became an Indianapolis suburb; however, it retains its rural character with several small villages within its borders including Sleepy Hollow and East Aurora which are still considered part of Cohoes Township today despite being located outside its boundaries - much like many other towns in this former Iroquois Nation hamlet: Beaver Dam (west side), Elksville (east side), Hubbardston (north side), Mathilda Heights (south side) and Northumberland Hills (westside). After years characterized by economic instability caused by natural disasters such as floods and fires ravaging portions of central New York State in recent decades – culminating with two devastating winters that killed more than 100 people throughout Upstate New York – Community Development Corporation President Brett Prendergast announced plans for $20 million over five years to support redevelopment initiatives around Cohoes’ core city area known as “The District” or “The Ring Road” because it would include new housing developments targeting low-income taxpayers who live near public transportation stops along I-480/I-690 corridors connecting downtown Indianapolis with I-70/I-94 corridor eastward into Dearborn County – about 20 miles west of Coventry center where most jobs are found today thanks to growth seen at nearby Ford Motor Co., Carrier Corp., Lucas Oil Refining & Marketing Company etc.–and adjacent neighborhoods comprising about 2 square miles inside “The District” so that developers could build market rate housing units without fear that their projects would be bulldozed due to lack thereof affordable units available on site contrary to current trend significantly increasing prices for single family home ownership relative to wage earners even though land values have not risen significantly since early 2000s despite over $1 billion dollars been spent total lately just within local government limits alone on behalf homeland security purposes only one example out group minority group living locally also experiencing significant issues recently unrelated specifically mentioned above although no mention made specifically regarding development impact particular community member involved
