The town was first settled by Dutch settlers in 1634 who named it Cohanessetown after their home country (now Holland). When English settlers arrived in 1664 they called it Northampton because that's where Northampton County lay (now Westchester County). The original village located on the north side of the river had just 12 residents when its founder Samuel de Vere acquired land east of current-day Main Street for farming purposes which he did not build but put into operation within days; he called it Devereuxstown. At first, farming was the mainstay economy, with crops such as corn, beans, wheat and potatoes being grown nearby. However, industry quickly emerged as key tenant in this early outpost. In 1807, a flour mill was founded in Cohoes by Nicholas Fenton and John Quinn; it would remain one of the most important mills in town until 1920 when it was replaced by an aluminum plant. During his time as Mayor of Cohoes (1914-16), Jepson Haggerty created what is now called "The Haggerty Doctrine" which aimed to stimulate economic development within downtown areas through private investment and promotion of nightlife amenities like movie theaters and nightclubs among other things. This policy helped drive up demand for downtown businesses while helping to create new jobs throughout the city center area. In 1907, Cohoes saw its first professional football game when local brothers Charles & Harry Haughey played against Long Island Rail Road employees at Mohawk Park; today part of Central High School Grounds complex on Main Street serves as home field for the high school's athletes both recreationally and competitively! The team has also fluctuated over time - starting out playing defensive football before transitioning into offense during World War II before returning to defense after that conflict ended! [1] By 1920 Aluminum production had eclipsed flour production so much that Congies merged their two factories creating Alcoa Industries Incorporated (later renamed United Technologies Corporation) – one of America’s largest manufacturers/producersof electrical appliances….. [2] Finally reaching maturity nearly thirty years ago following divestitures totaling $4 billion inflows/outflows resulting from international acquisitions– United Technologies Corporation lists assets under management amountingto $621 billion making it one world’s largest company………..
