Cohoes is a town in Clinton County, New York, United States. The population was 5,063 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Clinton County. The Cohoes Iron and Steel Company was founded in 1855. In 1865, Cohoes became the first village in Clinton County to be incorporated as a town. The first settler to arrive in what is now Cohoes was Nicholas Sisson who arrived on July 4, 1784 with his family from Great Britain. He named his land "Sington." Sisson's children built a cabin near present-day Cohoes on the Sacandaga River which they called "Stonington." In 1819, Nathan Hoadley came overland from Ireland and platted what is now Mohawk Street in front of the current Post Office building. This piece of land later became part of the town of Cohoes when it was organized under New York State laws on February 3, 1825. When work began on bringing water to Iroquois Falls by way of an underground pipeline in 1849–1850, local farmers collected buckets full of rainwater and used it to irrigate their fields for three years before finally hooking up the pipeline and getting paid for it! Townspeople soon realized that this new water source would be critical for continued economic development; so they went out collecting bucketfuls every day until construction stopped due to lack of funds just two years later! Incidentally, this particular project also won them national acclaim – being featured as oneof six projects covered by America's Most Amazing Engineering Achievements magazine! Today downtown Covese has become home to an array of businesses including restaurants (including Pizzeria Bianco), a post office (which served as headquarters during World War II), several libraries/museums (including Rococo House Museum & Library), arts and crafts stores (including Wellesley Arts & Crafts), a few bars/restaurants/stores along Mohawk Street between First Avenue South and Second Avenue North, as well as four high school districts: Collinsville High School District #1; Geneva-Cohoes Central School District #2; Glens Falls East High School District #3; and Oneonta-Cohoes West High School District #4! Oh yeah – there’s also plenty of space for people who like to live close by all while still enjoying all those great amenities found just outside your door!
