Cohoes is a town in Clinton County, New York, United States. The population was 2,818 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rochester–Syracuse, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Cohoes were Native Americans who hunted and gathered nearby game. In 1792, George Washington and his family moved from Alexandria, Virginia to Cohoes to farm land that he had bought from Daniel Webster. The town's name comes from the Mohawk word "khoi-nuh," meaning "place where there are woods." In 1801, the Burr brothers founded a mill on the River Ontario which became the town's largest employer. The town also developed into an agricultural center with generous land grants from various landowners including President James K. Polk and Senator Andrew Johnson. In 1825, Cohoes voted to join what would become Rochester as one of its five towns; it was the only other village in Monroe County not annexed by Rochester during that time period. By 1830, many businesses had been built and people began moving into Cohoes for its beautiful countryside and easy access to job opportunities in nearby villages like Auburn Hills or Geneva (now Utica). Many of these early residents still live in Cohoes today including Mayor Bob Buckley and Congressman John Lewisberry Jr.. One of their notable descendants is current Congressman Kathy Hochul of New York’s 5th congressional district who grew up in Cohoes before attending Syracuse University Law School During World War II, much of downtown was destroyed by bombing raids but most importantly this left behind a huge vacant warehouse complex known as “the Flamingo” which has served as a popular tourist spot ever since! The Millenia supermarket building (now known as PPL Plaza) located on Main Street between Seneca Falls Road and White Plains Road predates both Walmart & Target by over 30 years! It opened on October 1st 1973 under then Mayor Vincent Jaffe with anchor department stores Penney’s & Sears opening just across Seneca Falls Road soon after followed by Jaffe’s successor Richard Moseley with Safeway coming online shortly thereafter! Today it functions more as an office plaza than anything else! Today there are several restaurants clustered around either side of Route 9 north of downtown: Applebee’s BBQ next door to Macy’s; Chili Dog at IHOP on Broadway near Route 9; Boil & Bite at Dunkin Donuts next door to Joe Grillo’s Italian Delight; Village Bazaar inside PPL Plaza across from HSBC bank - all within walking distance or less if you take Bus #2 past First Niagara Bank downSeneca Falls Rd.; plus several independent restaurants scattered throughout Downtown such as Chinese Garden just east of Main Street near Colgate University; Vietnamese Noodle House further east along Central Blvd., formerly home/restaurant space for local artist Salvatore Ferragamo prior to being razed & redeveloped into residential units later this year...All told there are probably around 50+ locally-owned restaurants sprinkled throughout Downtown nowadays compared To when cohoes actually functioned primarilyas a bedroom community for rural areas beyond its borders !
Cohoes, New York is located in Warren County and was first settled in 1764. The town was named for John Cohoes, a Revolutionary War soldier. The population of Cohoes peaked at 3,000 in the 1840s and declined to 1,500 by 1860.
