By 1860, there were only four residents remaining in what would become Cohoes Village: two men working for Purdy (John Fenton and Cornelius Herrick), three women working for Mrs. Shively (Fannie Hanks, Lucretia Bogan and Margaret McNulty), and one man ( JOHN GORDON ). There was no school or church established within the limits of the village until 1830 when Revd John Crouse erected a plank church near where Manchester Road now crosses Mohawk Avenue; services began on June 1st that year following an sermon by Reverend Crouse himself (). On July 8th 1870, during the American Civil War, forces under General Ulysses S Grant burned down part of thevillage while retreating from Battle Creek after losing an important battle against Confederate troops; this event became known as "The Catastrophe". Aftermath saw most of the homes destroyed or damaged including Purdy's Castle which still stands today at 27 Washington Blvd., also known locally as "The White House." A few years later Congregationalists established their own church here (), which remains today with property comprising much of what is now cohoes business district—renowned architect firms such as Skidmore & Owings LLP are based out of this building along with major retailers Macy’s Inc., Sears Holdings Corporation., JC Penney Co., Applebee’s restaurant chain and many more modern businesses like Dunkin’ Donuts Company!. Elected officials include five mayors over forty years: Harry Kesselman (1945-1958), Lester Wojciechowski (1959-1986), Rudolph Giuliani (1987-1993), Tom Foley(1994-)and Timothy Mooneye(2001-.).
