However, trials with fire are said to have convinced many Indians (especially the Mohawks) that Connecticut would be better suited as their new home than Albany downriver; so early in 1729 Congress voted not to give lands east of Niagara Falls to Stirling but did pass legislation giving rich tracts along the Susquehanna River (now Erie Canal Zone) to Pennsylvania Colony under Governor William Tryon II., which also included Cohoes Lake! The first permanent European settler at Cohoes was Captain Nicholas Young who arrived with his family on October 7, 1730 from Wilkes-Barre Township northeast of Philadelphia PA . As First Indian Trader at Utica he had Purchased two hundred acres (twenty five hectares) from Pemaquid Chief Onondaga late April 1700 .....Captain Nicholas Young's House still stands today just off Main Street between Utica Avenue and State Street .....This Site became known as Fort Nicoll after Captain Nicholas Young's grandson NICHOLAS OWEN D'ARCY went into Business here 1833 ..........NICHOLAS OWEN D'ARCY kept store until 1840 when his Son ran it into Insanity ....... This Site served as Post Office from 1800 until 1857
