The Town of Canandaigua was first settled in 1795 by colonists from Ulster County, Ireland. The name derived from the Iroquois word "can-a-dhuin", meaning "place where fish spawn." The original grant for the town was made to Col. John Sullivan on October 12, 1795. In 1802, Canandaigua became an incorporated village under the jurisdiction of Albany. In 1825 it attained full chartered status as a town and received its current name from then-Governor George Clinton Canandaigua's daughter Charlotte Gibbs Canandaigua's husband Rev. Samuel Gibbs (1771-1836). At that time it had a population of 1,500 people. In 1827 it again attained full charter status and annexed the hamlet of Hamburg which situates east of present day Orange Avenue north of Union Street on what was then called Indian Heights (now part of Limekiln Road). In 1830 during Andrew Jackson's administration as President of the United States he revoked all charters granted to towns within his borders due to their size or lack thereof and ordered all towns in New York State to become villages with no more than one thousand residents each; this order applied equally to towns in Herkimer and Tioga Counties but not in Orsonocton or Oneida Counties which were exempted because they were portions of Kingston upon Hudson Colony at that time On July 3rd 1830 Jonathan Edwards offered for sale at public auction off 160 acres adjacent to Five Mile Creek including all that now forms half portion now known as Elmira Landing extending into canals on Kincaids River opposite modern day Canandaigua This land included present day parts of Elmira Village and could have been bought by any citizen who could afford it however only 10% or so thereof ever came available for purchase
