The village of Canandaigua was founded by Dutch colonists in 1624 and changed its name to Amherst in 1701 to reflect its status as the seat of Suffolk County. In 1800, it became part of Albany District and from 1821 to 1827 it was in Westchester County. In 1814, when George Clinton became the first U.S. president, he moved his headquarters from Saratoga Springs to Canandaigua for economic reasons because Albany had become too expensively defended. He named the town after King George III of England who had been visiting America at that time; during his stay in America he toured many places including Buffalo and Niagara Falls. In 1863, when Canandaigua became a city under New York State law, it adopted a flag based on that of Albany which featured an olive branch symbolizing commerce and industry while also featuring three maple leaves for representation of agriculture and forestry; this flag has flown continuously since then (it replaced an earlier version with two leaves). The current coat-of-arms features an erect staff surmounted by aaloi or wildcat feline ears with dexter hands holding branches reaching up towards a conical hillock with thirteen stars above - alluding to both Canandaigua's location on one side of Mohawk Valley and its early importance as an agricultural center due to its fertile soil; additionally, the rampant lion refers to both rural strength and American expansionism through trade

The village of Canandaigua, now part of the town of Utica in upstate New York, was founded by the Dutch in 1614. It was renamed after Jameson, Countess of Ormonde and Stewart's Minister to England (1612-1623). The first white settler in Canandaigua was Abraham Pierson on October 1, 1614.
