Canandaigua is a town in the Towns of Canandaigua and Easton in Upstate New York, United States. The population was 11,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse- Syracuse Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit what is now Canandaigua was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. He named it after his hometown of Venice, Italy. A post office called Canandaigua was established in 1795, and remained in operation until 1892. In 1814, General George Washington's party passed by on their way from Albany to Montreal via Buffalo and stopped at Canandaigua for the night before continuing on their journey the next day. The Governor of New York ordered a detachment of militiamen under Colonel John Armstrong to stop Washington's army as they crossed the Mohawk River into Canada. In 1815 fur traders founded a trading post at present-day Canandaigua Falls with twenty square miles (50 km2) of land grant including what is now downtown Canandaigua. In 1795, Pierre Dorion built Fort Christopher which served as a base for his Indian trade operations up the Niagara River corridor from Lake Ontario to Georgian Bay. After years of construction and defensive fortification, Fort Christopher became operational on July 14, 1800 when General James Clinton attacked and captured it from Pierre Dorion following an engagement near present-day Rochester Hills; this event marks the beginning of The War Of1812 between Great Britain and America which led to independence for both countries two years later As commerce grew along with settlement around central New York City through Erie Canal projects such as Utica – Presque Isle Ferry terminal – Lockport Arsenal – then Onondaga County westward into modern day Central New York State (and ultimately all but one county within Ontario), transportation infrastructure soon became necessary beyond military bases or river crossings due primarily to increased population densities Boroughs were annexed by larger cities sharing services like schools, fire hydrants etc., while rural areas often lacked basic amenities like water supply or roads making goods transported difficult or impossible to arrive at
Canandaigua is a small village in Ulster County, New York, United States. The population was 546 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse-Ayrshire, New York Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Village of Canandaigua was first settled in 1796 by Loyalists from Nova Scotia and Pennsylvania who had fled to escape British occupation during the American Revolution. The original grant for the village was made by Governor George Clinton to Major John Stevens. At the time of its founding, Canandaigua consisted of about fifty homes and two stores. The village grew rapidly due to the influx of new settlers, especially after canal construction began nearby in 1825 increased trade and transportation opportunities throughout the region. The present day Village of Canandaigua was chartered on December 12, 1827 by William Halsey (1782-1844), one of America's firstFourteenth Amendment signers and a graduate of Yale College where he had studied law under James Otis Jr.. After serving as Deputy Adjutant General for Chenango County during the Mexican–American War (1846-48), Halsey became Territorial Governor at Albany in 1850 before being elected as First Sheriff of Onondaga County in 1851. From 1853 to 1865 he served as Mayor of Syracuse; his term ended when Syracuse City Charter granted mayorial powers to other municipalities within city limits on November 1, 1865. During his tenure as Mayor, Halsey also helped secure passage in 1886 – 88 through both houses of Congress an act which created Erie Canal Company - making Buffalo their eastern sister city for transportation purposes He died August 9th, 1884 at age 80 years old following a long and successful career as mayor culminating with election on November 3rd that year to succeed his friend Moses Taylor as State Senator from Onondaga County In celebration marking His 90th birthday this year we are reprinting some recollections about our very own William Halsey hereunder: "It would be difficult to overestimate Mr Halsey’s lifelong impact on our community...he has been deeply involved with civic life since he arrived here over 40 years ago." William Henry “Willie” Halsey attended school until age ten then went off to work odd jobs until 1886 when he was appointed Superintendent Of Schools In Onondaga County by thenGovernor Elias Boudinot...Halsey successfully lobbied hard for state funding needed for expanding education services across all counties so local boys could have access not just within their own precinct but statewide... He achieved great success while Superintendent leading Toomexporte Elementary School students into 7th grade having previously taught them K-8 grades at home...In 1951 Willie won reelection unopposed ehurning opponents endorsed by local businessmen & Lodge #5C lodge member Hugh Carey Sr…That same year Willie founded Our Lady Of Charity Hospital property now occupied by Sacred Heart Hospital

Canandaigua is a town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 1,871 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Utica-Rome, NY Micropolitan Statistical Area. The village of Canandaigua also includes most of the town. The first settlers in what is now Canandaigua were French Canadians who arrived from Quebec in 1764. The area that would become Canandaigua was first settled by Germans in 1817 and then by Irish immigrants in 1824. In 1828, a group of Baptist missionaries founded what would become Holy Trinity Episcopal Church on the site of present-day Canandaigua High School; this church still serves as the town's primary religious facility today. The Town of Canandaigua was formed from a small section of Sullivan County east of Utica on November 3, 1841. At its peak it had a population of just under 2,000 people but by 1860 it had grown to over 10,000 residents due to land grant settlements and an influx of Scottish and English immigrants who had come to escape poverty and political unrest abroad. Canandaigua became an important transportation hub during the mid 19th century as it served as both a stop for stagecoaches traveling between Utica and Rome (the main city on Long Island) as well as for farm goods being transported back and forth between Utica and Tomahawk River Valley villages such as Rome (now Watertown), Baldwinsville (now Sayreville),and Northumberland (now West Seneca). canadaigeuan farmers grew corn, wheat, rye, potatoes and other crops along with some apple orchards; later cotton plantations were established nearby. During World War I various industries sprang up around CanandaigUA including munitions production at General Electric Company's factory on Union Avenue; textiles manufacturing at Beecham Rubber Company's plant on State Street; engineering work at Carrier Corporation's new factory located southwest off Main Street near the railroad tracks; automobiles manufactured by Ford Motor Company at their new Factory Park south of downtown; shoeshine parlors operated by Danish Americans opened along Canal Street near where present day Elmira College stands today; blacksmithing businesses were also established hereabouts including one run by Abraham Lincoln Slocum which produced tools used throughout western New York during his presidency In spite all these industrial advances howevereely much water Pollution destroyed many homes early 20th century even before cars came onto scene
