Canandaigua is a town in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse-Albany-Troy Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Canandaigua was Nicholas de Champlain in 1614. He built a small log cabin on the site of present day Canandaigua Lake. In 1785, Captain John Montresor founded an orange plantation here and named it after his home town of Newport, Rhode Island. The first orchard was established in 1792 by Colonel George Washington and his brother James Montresor. Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt bought the property from Colonel Washington in 1839 and renamed it Canandaigua Plantation after himself. In 1848, General Ulysses S. Grant visited Canandaigua and pronounced its name "Canton". By 1857, all but one of the original farmsteads had been abandoned due to disease caused by syphilis carried by wild animals into the area by Native Americans during their winter hunting excursions across central New York State (the exception being Manor House Farm which continued to be used for farming until 1940). In 1886, Allan Nevinsplit moved to Canandaigua from Moravia Township, Pennsylvania with his family to start what would become Nevinsplit Electric Company; he would later become president of Jiffy Lube Co., Ltd.. In 1907–1908 Willard Richards set up a bottling plant here that became Oneida Bottling Company; eventually becoming PepsiCo Inc.. On July 11th, 1947 local resident Clarence Berry achieved national fame when he won the gold medal at the 1948 Summer Olympics held in Sydney Australia for BASE jumping with partner Dick Beaumont.. On January 4th 1945 local resident Arnie Schering achieved international fame when he became world's first human powered Helicopter when he piloted HH-2V Venom from Utica Airport to Orchard Beach Pier where he placed third in an international competition sponsored by Aero Club International.. Under current zoning laws this landing spot should have been designated as a park however since no development has occurred there remains an open field that offers excellent views of Utica Harbor .. It is interesting to note that although many people throughout history have contributed significantly to local culture and economy through their work or residence here - few if any have received recognition or immortality beyond their native place...
