In 1825, John Van Dyke donated land to the town for public school purposes. Canandaigua is named after Mount Anacondas, which dominates both its skyline and its center of population. The name means "place where many rivers meet." It has been reported that this may be because Mount Anaconda forms an arc around most of the community's boundaries. A post office called Canandaigua was established in 1827, but failed to open due to lack of subscribers. In 1841, local developer David Potter opened what would become one of the earliest commercial enterprises in CanandaigUA - a grocery store and bakery called Potter's Corner.(Today'senterprise forms much of downtown)In 1845, local physician Drs John Geddes and George Washington Ellis founded an asylum for mental patients (later renamed Elmira State Hospital). This early medical facility played an important role in developing mental health care in New York state during the 19th century; it served as both a hospital and testing ground for new treatments.)In 1865, local farmer Josiah Strong erected a large frame courthouse "(now part of old Main Street)". Canandaigua is a town in Genesee County, New York, United States. The population was 9,651 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Genesee. Canandaigua is one of three towns in the Erie-Lackawanna Railway System and lies on the west bank of the Niagara River. The first permanent white settler in what is now Canandaigua was Nicholas Merrill in 1792. Merrill built a log cabin near present-day Canandaigua Lake on his farm which he called "Merrill's Mill." He also operated a sawmill and grist mill in the town for some years. In 1824, George Stephenson built a steamboat dock at present-day Canandaigua Harbor to load lumber from mills around Buffalo onto boats destined for New York City. Commodore John Cushing leased land at current-day State Street and First Avenue in Canandaigua to build anvil factories to produce nails and other metals needed for construction projects across America during the Gilded Age. The Works Progress Administration (WPA) financed many of these projects through grants from Congress; Canandaigua became known as "the Factory Town." Canandaigua's growth began slowly but steadily during World War II as manufacturing jobs grew available after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor and then invaded China; demand for goods made from Chinese cellsars led to rapid economic expansion during that war period; canning industry boomed due to increased popularity of pickled vegetables as an easy way to market canned goods outside North America; early 20th century industrial buildings were replaced by commercial buildings such as stores, churches, schools, hotels/motels and restaurants starting about 1930; downtown business district declined between 1950s and 1970s when new shopping malls were developed along Interstate 95 north of town center; however, recent redevelopment has begun with several new businesses being opened downtown including a small park adjacent to First Avenue Sq., renovated theaters/theaters north of I-95 on Third Street NE., new housing developments south of I-195 on Fourth Street NE., renovation or reconstruction of several old churches including Our Lady Of Good Counsel Roman Catholic Church (1851), Stations Episcopal Church (1902), St Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church (1903), John Wesley Methodist Episcopal Zion Church (1920) and Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Parish (1867). Today's economy is based largely upon services rather than manufacturing although there are still some small businesses located primarily within Downtown Canandaigua which include two wineries among others. One big impact from tourism has been increased development along Second Avenue SE just east of I-95 between Summit Road NW & Elmira Road NW which includes multiple upscale retailers like Macy’s, Sears etc.; also consider Niagara Falls if you're looking for amusement park attractions nearby
