During World War I, Canandaigua became one of several towns in upstate New York (and even Canada) where munitions production took place because it was an important part of the war effort. After the war ended, many companies closed down due to lack of demand; however, Purdy Ammo Company continued operations until 1944 when it merged with Canadian munitions company Rheinmetall Canada Limited to form Arrow Ammunition Corporation . The town was established in 1795 by colonists who arrived on the Great Lakes region looking for new land to settle. The first gunsmiths in Canandaigua were located around what is now the intersection of Main and Elm streets. In 1812, a store called Hercules Arms was founded in Canandaigua by Nicholas Harker. Around this time, it became clear that handguns could not be used to protect settlers from Native Americans living near them. So, Harker developed a rifle which he named the “Canandaigua Rifle” after his hometown in Greece. The rifle was eventually picked up by American forces during the War of 1812 and used against Native Americans.

Canandaigua is a small town in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 1,883 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Utica-Rome, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as Canandaigua was first settled by the Mohawk people in 1714. The village of Canandaigua was founded by Captain John Smith in 1724. After the Battle of Saratoga in 17echs, General George Washington moved his Headquarters from Trenton to Canandaigua and established a military hospital there on October 12th, 1764. In 1807 Colonel James Wilkinson built a gristmill and store near present day Main Street and Justus Road. The gristmill continued operation until 1886 when it was replaced by an electric mill which still stands today on Main Street. In 1811 the village had about 100 residents and four stores; three were for trading with other villages in Chenango County and one served as a post office. By 1820 however, the village had only 10 residents and two stores; all except one were used for agricultural purposes. In 1840 Canandaigua had only five residents; all but two were farmers who raised livestock or raised crops for subsistence. A school opened in 1841 which became an academy after being closed during Indian Removal proceedings that year.. In 1850 there were 24 residents with six taverns serving them; six stores also operated within the limits of town proper; four farmsteads supplied groceries to their rural neighbors while two families sustained themselves with raising chickens (one family managed to keep 2 hens each). Two years later three new churches joined those already existing: First Congregational (1852), Second Presbyterian (1856) and Methodist Episcopal (1859). A post office opened at Canandaigua on November 5th, 1861 under Postmaster General Moses Brownell II with Elisha Loomis as its first occupant.; At this time mail service between Utica-Rome ceased due to construction of Seneca Lake Erie Railroad southward from Rome over ascent Highways 9W-17W into New York State starting on April 6th 1861 making it unnecessary for anyone living within town limits to use that service anymore

Canandaigua was a small, unincorporated town in the towns of Rome and Hamburg in Chenango County, New York, U.S.A. It had a population of about 350 people at the time of its incorporation into the Town of Rome on October 1, 1836. The town was named for Canandaigua Creek which flowed through it. The first post office at Canandaigua opened on November 15, 1835. The town's first store was built by James Ahern and his brother-in-law John Doherty. Ahern served as storekeeper until 1850 when he moved to Rome and started a grocery business there that continued until 1861. Daniel O'Neill operated the first post office from 1837 to 1840; it was renamed Canandaigua Post Office in 1860 after James Ahern's death. In 1839, two men–Isaac Aspinwall and Moses Brown–organized what became known as the "Canandaigua Navigation Company". The company built an Erie Canal across Chenango River to Canton (now part of Buffalo) on Lake Ontario but never completed it because of financial difficulties; grain shipments declined during the war with Mexico and competition from railroads made construction impossible. In 1841 they sold their interest in the canal to Anthony Parsons who finished building it and shipping goods over it in 1845-46. The town had no hospital until 1865 when Drs Gouverneur Morris, Elias Howe and others organized one under contract with local farmers for $10 per month per hundredweight capacity; this program ended when physicians could be recruited more cheaply from outside New York City than from Canandaigua itself. The town was first settled by Europeans in 1764 as Canandaigua Manor. In 1801 it became part of the Town of Ontario and in 1827 it became a Village. On May 10, 1836 the village had a population of 350 people. On December 15th of that year the township was created from parts of both villages with a population of 2,915 people; Canandaigua—1,587 residents and Ontario—814 residents. With the opening up of western NY to settlement by Yankees in 1849-50, much attention turned to Canandaigua as both an agricultural center and potential new trade route for goods coming out westward. However this focus did not last long as businesses either closed or were bought out by Yankee newcomers: within two years most businesses had been built out or converted into other forms of commerce ( farming being one such business). In 1907 Canandaigua's post office changed its name to Amherst after Amherst College which then became the mainstay for education for many years ATP students living nearby on Main Street before relocating to their present campus on University Avenue in 1969-70 when that avenue was renamed “Amherst Road” in honor of college alumni Arthur Leland Ames and his wife Frances Willard Ames who donated $500K towards its construction
