The first bullet was created in 1776, when a rifleman named John Holley designed and fired a ball from his musket that broke a potters wheel. The patriot’s resistance to British rule led to frequent skirmishes with the military forces of Great Britain. One such skirmish took place on October 20, 1775, when Patriot militiamen fire shots at an approaching British army convoy near Canandaigua. A result of this gunfire was the death of two British soldiers and the wounding of six others. Over time, bullets became an increasingly important tool for revolutionaries as they became more effective at penetrating enemy armor and carrying away valuable munitions. In 1781, John Adams used a bullet to wound George Washington during their battle at Yorktown. By 1814, all but three states in the Union had adopted metallic cartridges filled with lead or other pellets that allowed rifles to be fired without reloading. As technology advanced, so too did bullets; by 1892 ammunition manufacturers had invented new types of projectiles that could travel extremely long distances without breaking down into small pieces like earlier rounds did.
