Canandaigua is a small town in the southeastern corner of New York State, located on the southern bank of the Chenango River. It is part of the Utica-Rome, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 7,859 at the 2010 census. The first people to live in what is now Canandaigua were Native Americans. They built their villages along the riverbanks and hunted game with bows and arrows. After white settlers arrived in this area in 1776, they began building homes androads around Canandaigua. The first post office called Canandaigua was established in 1803. In 1825, a group of farmers from Utica founded a village called Rome on land that had been bought from an Indian chief by George Washington and his family for $5 per acre (the equivalent of about $140 today). The settlers named their new community after Rome, Italy because it was thought that they would be able to find food there as well as get supplies for their farmsteads. However, within a few years most of the colonists had left because of lack of money or other opportunities. In 1836, American forces deployed into New York during the War of 1812 under General Anthony Wayne captured Fort Erie near Niagara Falls while besieging Canada’s capital Toronto; this led to Buffalo being renamed Canandaigua after Major General John Armstrong’s headquarters at Niagara Falls which became known as Fort Erie (later re-named canada). In 1840, when Utica Became A Town within Monroe County line., Canandaigua got its own Post Office which lasted until 1865 when it merged with nearby Rome & AlbanyPost Offices..
