Buffalo was a trading post on the Mohawk River in upstate New York during the 17th century. The first European tosight Buffalo was one of several French and Indian posts on the river. In 1614, Pierre de Montmorency, Sieur de Nemours, traveled downstream from Montreal and anchored at Buffalo for provisions before moving on to Fort Duquesne in 1615. The French built Fort Niagara in 1764 as part of their effort to take control of the Ohio Valley. The British also built a fort at Niagara Falls in 1765 as part of their efforts to keep the Americans from taking over the area. The British abandoned their fortifications at Niagara Falls in 1775, and Buffalo became an American town. The city of Buffalo developed around two railroad terminals: First Terminal (now Erie Street) opened in 1853 and Second Terminal (now Main Street) opened in 1857. The Erie Railroad connected Buffalo with Detroit and other major cities across New York State. The main hub for this line was downtown where trains stopped for passengers waiting inside or outside buildings such as hotels and stores. In 1868, construction began on what is now Oneonta Avenue between Third Avenue and Fifth Avenue, which served as the northern terminus for Amtrak's Empire Builder service until it was cancelled in 1978. This route coincided with the construction of new bus lines serving Southwestern Ontario towns north of Toronto that were taken over by Metrolinx after GO Transit discontinued passenger service there in 1991). A new train terminal opened at Canalside Park near downtown in 1982 after years of planning by Mayor George Patrick who hoped that this would make it easier for tourists to visit Buffalo without having to go downriver along the rapids known as "the Devil's Ditch". Today both terminals are used by Amtrak but can also be used by PATH trains terminating at Port Authority Transportation Center east off Interstate 90 just south of Main Street which offers connections with Long Island Rail Road/New Haven Railroad services heading into Manhattan or points beyond
