On October 14, 1785, during King George II's visit to Canada, he ordered General Philip Schuyler to surrender Fort Niagara after a three-day siege which began November 3rd and ended December 2nd followingSchuyler's retreat into Canada with about 1,500 casualties including 100 Americans killed or taken prisoner

In recent years there has been an increase in art galleries downtown which have helped revive downtown businesses during a time when many other parts of town have seen stagnation or decline; however these successes pale into insignificance beside Buffalo's more headline-grabbing controversies such as its ongoing public nudity debate or its role as one of America's "most segregated" cities according to Census data released last year
