In 1879, an American Optometric Association meeting was held at the Hotel Erie in Buffalo to discuss new methods for spectroscopy and optical diagnostics. The following year, Buffalo's first optometric business, Sutter & Day, opened its doors. By 1896,Buffalo had three medical schools which offered optometry degrees: the University of Buffalo School of Medicine and Dentistry; Western State Hospital; and Niagara Falls General Hospital. In 1903, two brothers named Ambrose and Harry Sutter founded the Rochester Optical Company with their father's encouragement. The company produced early eyeglasses and lens products including monoculars, binoculars, telescope lenses and an ultraviolet light projector called the "Sutterscope." In 1907-8, construction began on what is now known as the Erie County Fairgrounds in downtown Buffalo. It was here that one of America’s first large-scale open-air exhibitions featuring optics took place – The National Optics Exhibition from October 14 to 18th 1908. This exposition featured over 1,500 exhibitors from around the United States exhibiting their latest products in glasses and apparels for general use or special occasion use. In 1912-13 Dr John Anderton established his own hospital - Anderton Memorial Hospital - providing care for patients with vision health problems such as cataracts or macular degeneration. The hospital also served as a research center conducting clinical trials with various new technologies such as ophthalmic surgery and laser eye surgery

In 1814 British soldiers burned down village near present-day downtown; this event led to retaliatory raids by French Canadians during 1815 War for Quebec independence. Between 1825 and 1830 Erie Canal was built through central Buffalonians; this opened up new areas for settlement including what are now downtown Buffalo and neighbourhoods such as Midtown/Southwestside/Northwest Side etc., among others. The original inhabitants of what is now Buffalo were Algonquian-speaking Mohawk people who lived on Buffaloeskin Island. They traded with other indigenous nations and fur traders from Canada before coming to North America and establishing themselves in what is now western Pennsylvania and central Ontario. By 1785, they had founded a village on Niagara River land that became the nucleus of their future city. In 1821, Buffalo was chartered as an incorporated town under English law by Sir John Auld; it became an international port on Niagara River because transportation improved with American independence from Great Britain four years later. Buffalo was founded in 1757 by the French and Indian War veterans, Pierre-Joseph de Montcalm and his forces. The city is named after the Buffalo Plains, which are located near the present day downtown area. The first European to visit Buffalo was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. In 1814, the United States acquired Erie County from Great Britain through the Treaty of Ghent. This gave Buffalo land rich in resources such as coal, iron ore, limestone, and other minerals. The city experienced rapid growth during its early years because of its strategic location at a crossroads for trade routes linking New York with Canada and Philadelphia. However, economic decline set in during the 19th century as railroads replaced traditional modes of transportation and commerce declined throughout much of Western America. By World War I, Buffalo had lost most of its manufacturing importance due to new technologies such as Ford Motor Company's assembly plant on Niagara Falls Boulevard (now Main Street). However, thanks to efforts by Mayor John Hylan (1928-1945) and others including First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt (1933-1945), Buffalo has regained some former industrial prominence over the past few decades.
