Buffalo is the cultural and economic center of western New York City. The first people to settle in what is now Buffalo were Native Americans who built villages on islands in Niagara River. They arrived by canoes from eastern Canada around 1624. The first European to visit what is now Buffalo was Giovanni Battista della Viltara, governor of Quebec for John II France in 1664. Della Viltara reported seeing "a great bay with many islands" near the present day downtown area and called it "Biloxi". He named these new villages after himself, Biloxi or Biscayne Bay on the Canadian side and Niagara Falls on the American side due to their location at two crossing points where water levels high enough to create islands flowing into Lake Erie then flow out again onto Lakes Ontario and Niagara respectively. By 1701 there were over 25 villages located along both banks of the Niagara River including Fort George (now within Downtown Buffalo) which was founded by British colonists under William III in 1702 as part of efforts to control an Allegheny tribe led by Chief Pontiac that had captured much land north of Toronto since 1614 including parts now included within Ottawa County and Renfrewshire County outside Greater Toronto Area In 1784 a party from Connecticut under Colonel George Washington discovered Indian Archipelago off shore near Sayre Island while exploring Down East Coast waters for means to get back home; they named this group Thetis because they found five large white breasts (Triton's unique feature). These acquisitions included much of today's Buffalo metropolitan area including all or portions of four counties: Erie (northwest corner), Niagara (northern edge), Onondaga (central region) and Wayne (southwest corner). In 1827–1828 Timothy Talese built a log cabin on Castle Island near where he would later build his famous hotel – now known as Old Main building – on First Street in downtown Buffalo. This cabin became known as Talese's Harbor Inn because it served as a base for fishing and shipping operations off Long Island Sound until it burned down in 1880s due to arson by local fishermen who thought it had been caught fire! Today one can walk across the landing site where Tim Talese anchored his boat for fishing trips back then! The harbor inn remained an active fishing ground well into prohibition era because no other place could offer better catches than those waters off Long Island Sound! In 1882–1883 John Puskar managed construction work for James Geddes onNiagara Falls Boulevard near where Geddes' Hotel now stands. During this time Puskar also constructed several small buildings along Niagara Falls Boulevard still standing today such as Geddes' Ice Cream Parlour Building located at 5th Avenue West & Main Street which still serves ice cream sandwiches daily since 1929 while Geddes' Wharf Warehouse located at 6th Avenue West & Kingston Road serving fresh catch nightly since 1886 remains structurally unchanged! A few years later Jno.[P]uskar started constructing an elaborate series of brick buildings on current day Elmwood Avenue between Third Street & Fourth Street which served as Buffalos first public high school –now known as Empire High School - until its closure in 1954 due to budget constraints brought about by World War II escalating military spending within America! Today Elmwood Ave continues being renamed after Puskar's project with many businesses along its length continuing operation such As Cement Works Inc., Ford dealership etcetera

In 1814, United States troops burned down the village of Seneca Falls after a demonstration against American treatment of Native Americans.
