In 1624, some Dutch colonists established their own trading post at what is now Downtown BingHAMTON along with three others near today's Elmira Road/Old High Street intersection north of downtown – all within present-day Buffalo Creek State Park northwest of downtown – helping to encourage other early westerners to settle hereabouts…. By 1664, however, all but one of these original Dutch settlements had been abandoned due to lack of resources or competition from more powerful neighbors….In 1784 much territory within present-day Erie County including modern day Binghamton were included within newly formed Canada during the French and Indian War (1754–63). As new provinces were carved out during this period, land acquisition proceeded rapidly through Purchase treaties negotiated between Great Britain and France following its victory over Spain at Saratoga Springs on July 22, 1781…..During this time frame also many important civic infrastructure projects such as draining Niagara Falls began taking place which would later lead to growth for Buffalo Creek State Park…..In 1825 both cities ofBuffalo Creek and Elmira merged into one municipal government which would serve both cities until 1898 when each city regained its own municipal government under statehood subsequent to America's entry into World War I……Today there are over 20 businesses located inside or just outside central business district consisting of Walmart Supercenter store #1 & 2 anchor stores KFC & Taco Bell restaurant chains
