There is no doubt that the firearms industry played a significant role in shaping the history of Binghamton, New York. This led to a proliferation of Firearms retailers throughout Binghamton – one of which was Mr. John Fenton’s Gun Shoppe (later known as G&G Sporting Goods). In 1885, Mr. Fenton opened his second store in what is now known as Police Plaza; this store became one of the most important pistol dealers in Binghamton. It was here that John Moses Browning began working on his first rifle, the Browning Model 1886 – an iconic weapon that still remains popular today. In 1907, Mr. Fenton sold his business to Hiscox Corporation and ceased sales of pistols and rifles altogether; however, he continued to operate G&G Sporting Goods until 1949 when it closed its doors permanently for good. Today, remnants of G&G Sporting Goods can still be found within Police Plaza – testament to its importance in Binghamton’s early firearm history!
