The area now known as Binghamton was first settled by Algonquian-speaking Iroquois Native Americans in what is now southern Ontario and central New York during the late 17th century and early 18th century. The town's name comes from Sir William Bingham, who purchased land here in 1784. In 1813, it became part of Erie County, New York due to its importance as a transportation hub on the Great Lakes region and its close proximity to Buffalo. The population reached 30,000 by 1870; however, economic factors led to declining populations throughout most of 20th century until 2000 when it began growing again thanks to bolstered job opportunities and new development around thetown center and elsewhere. In recent years Binghamton has been recipients of several awards including being named one of "America's Top Place for Work/ Life Balance" by Forbes magazine in 2016 and also becoming home to several world-class colleges and universities such as Cornell University (the largest private university in New York), Lockwood College, SUNY Empire State College, Mohawk Valley Community & Technical Institute, Brown University, Buffalo Niagara Medical Center The history of Binghamton can be traced back over 500 years when European colonists arrived here during what is known as the fur trade era. Many important people from this time have their roots here including Peter Minuit who founded Albany on Long Island Sound in 1624; John Winthrop who came here with his religious group in 1630; Anthony Lawson who came with English traders in 1664; Nicholas Fortescue who built an extensive fortification system around present day Binghamton after winning an independence battle against Dutch forces at Beech Point on Lake George in 1685; Revolutionary War General Israel Putnam whose troops occupied much of present day eastern NY following their victory at Saratoga Springs on September 26th General Nathanael Greene who used this strategic location near Niagara Falls for his operations against British forces In 1784 William Bingham bought much land east of downtown from Nicholas Fortescue for $1 million which became known as “Old Town” because it had not yet been developed into a full city like today’s downtown. This area later became known as “Binghampton Village” because so many pioneer families lived there including Philip Stockbridge ( father-in-law to Reverend Jonathan Edwards) In 1800 Indian Removal Act forced about 6000 Cherokee Indians living eastward along Pennsylvania Avenue (now Capitol Hill) into western Erie County where they were given just 12 days notice to leave their homes or face death if they did not take public transportation westward before dark on July 8th 1800 This event is also considered pivotal moment when United States government gave up informal control over Indian Territory that had been under direct military jurisdiction since 1537

Today, Binghamton remains home to many businesses and organizations related to technology such as Microsoft Research Asia Pacific headquarters and IBM’s Technology Park China campus
